New to forum:question on alarm

Being a newbie I'll give you the quick Bio and then ask my question: Car nut since 67 , started road racing motorcycles in 85 switched to SCCA in 90/91. I've raced everything from Formula Vee , D-sports racer , Mazda Miata to my vintage(?) Datsun1200. I also organize a local stage rally , instruct at track days as well as "crew" for my 11 yr old son who Autocrosses a Kart.

I just bought an 01 Protge ES (17" wheels , cold air , borla exhaust ) , my previous daily driver was a 71 Volvo 142E rally recon vehicle , I'm having trouble figuring out how to activate the alarm. I push the red key fob panic button and the alarm goes for 2 minutes or so.....this can't be how the system works right.
So someone help a poor bald fortysomething figure out this tech stuff.

Tom , Vegas

PS; I'll warn you guys up front I'll be trying to get you to go to Auto-X , Rally-X , Rally and Track days - like most racers I pimp the sport and try to discourage street racing.

Mine might be different but the alarm controls are included with the lock/unlock remote for the car. With that setup. Unlocking the car will disarm the alarm, while pushing lock twice will disarm it. hope that helps.
and sorry, I'm not a racer, street or otherwise.

Yeah, if im not mistaken, when you hit the Lock button twice, the horn should honk, then I think its armed. You can test by pulling the door handles and letting them go, and the horn honks. Also you can hit the corner panels(just punch them lightly lol) and it should honk, if one of the above is done like 3 times it goes to full alarm with honks lights and everything.

Is that how the alarm works on all of the 99+ models, or is this specific to the 01+? Is there a factory alarm system on the 99/00 models?

The only thing the panic button does is activate the horn. It does not necessarily mean you have an alarm. I bought the factory alarm and installed it myself, so I know what it includes. Easiest way to tell if you have the alarm is to look for a small red LED on the black plastic surround for the instrument binnacle (the instructions say to mount it in the middle just below the speedo). If you don't have one, then you probably don't have an alarm. if you want to be sure, then get on your back in the footwell and look up under the driver's side. If there is an alarm, you will have a metal box in there somewhere (if they chose to use the shock sensor, then there will be a small black plastic box visible attached to part of the wiring harness).

If you want more info PM me. I don't have access to my paperwork right now, but will in a couple of days.

Welcome to the forum. You will find a LOT of good info here, and everyone is very helpful.

After I posted my original response, I thought of another way to check if you have the factory alarm without crawling around under the dash. Lock the car using your remote, then use the key and open the trunk. If you have the alarm, it WILL go off.
