the new guy.. sorta

So I'm new around here. I think I've had an account for a while but it says I last visited feb 10th 2006.. hmm.

I don't think I've ever even posted.

I have a 2002 Protege5 and have a few questions. first, does an intake really add 10hp? to the wheels? also, which is better, SRI or CAI?

I bought one of those chips off ebay and it doesn't seem to have improved my performance.. did I perhaps install it wrong?

oh and here's some pictures of my car:

in closing.. what mods can I do with $400 to get ~20whp?

thanks! I love this little car

Welcome back. You should hang around here more often, then you would know that the chip is useless and even harmful. And you would have whatever you spent on a ten-cent resistor still in your pocket. Get rid of it now.

No intake will give you 10 whp. 2-4.

And you'll need to spend more than $400 for 20 whp.

I won't be a pimp and mention that a header and intake combo would net you 9-11 whp and that I sell them, though.

Oh, jeez, I can't believe I fell for this one.
Kansei, goddamit! I was thinking it was you, too, when I saw the pic.

I feel so stoopid now.

bahaha so you saw the pics and still thought I seriously bought an ebay chip? I love it.. you muuust not have seen the third pic, or looked at the 2nd pic much, because they kinda give it away

glad to see some familiar (albeit many under different names) faces around here. You're Protephile on the other forum, right?

The chip is useless, I would take Gary's (Kargoboy) advice and get rid of it ASAP. If you are interested in an intake, Gary also sells excellent products made by Simota at a very good price. Other intakes sell for $200+ and his are in the $100 range.

SRI vs. CAI is not a big difference. Maybe 1 HP or so, but if you're really looking to get the most out of every mod then you might wanna consider one of Gary's Twin Charger intakes. It's like a CAI but with variable diameter pipes which allow you to compress more air into the throttle body. It probably counts for only an additional 1-2 HP at most vs. a regular CAI though so it's not a big deal. And as he already mentioned himself, all intakes will give you 4-5 HP at MOST on our engines.

As far as getting an additional 20 HP or so it's not gonna be very easy getting there. Intake/Header/Exhaust is good for 10-15 HP but it's gonna cost you more than $400.
