New version of a CAI?

New version of a CAI?
Has anyone thought about wrapping the intake our cars have (the resperator is in the front anyway sucking in direct wind created by car speed, which is nice...not a nice thing is that it sits on top of the radiator and piping goes from it to behind the radiator which you know is hot, hot hot) with foil covered insulation, like they cover duct work, and taping it with the heavy duty foil tape? If I did it I would use 1.5 to 2 inch thick, all the way up to the filter box and beyond. This foil is high temp reflective and very durable. I know it wouldn't look great, but it seems that it would get the heat from the radiator and whole engine compartment out of the air-intake. The reason I thought about this is because with the Cold-air intake systems I've seen, I wonder how much air actually gets to the CAI....it is sitting under the hood in the engine compartment (where it's hot), usually sitting behind the driver's side lights, etc. Is there really a good amount of "wind" that squeezes in there, under the hood, to be sucked up by the custom CAI's? Seems that cost wouldn't be bad either compared to what's for sale out there.

Not a bad idea, you may be onto something there. I have thought about ways to modify the stock intake, but haven't really come up with anything. I like the way the ram draws air from the front of the hood, but there isn't any kind of air box or scoop for it to draw air from outside the engine compartment. I plan on just ditching the stock intake very soon.

stock intake is garbage and should be treated accordingly. It is NOT effective at all and there is no such thing as "ram-air" on the protege. The stock opening isn't "ram-air"....it's just the inlet location. Just buy the ebay CAI and be happy.

Okay, thanks for the suggestion. However, the '01 intake that was on ebay has been sold now and all that's left are '02 and higher. I need to know if it will fit my car. Remember that I have neither the MSP nor the MP3.

sorry
Hey, I forgot to get you the link but if you go to ebay and type in "Protege 2.0L intake" you'll get about 2 pages of stuff. Just look for the one thats about $42shipping....i think I saw about 10 of them on there.

2 and 3 are the exact same except for the filter. I bought mine from 2 but got the filter that 3 is selling.
Neither of these 3 or COLD air intakes. They are all short ram. I would recommend looking for the intake with the grey rubber 90* elboe, and a long thin grey cone filter. This one was a true CAI and would probably produce a nicer gain

Okay, Thanks...those are $45 with buy it now price at $48...mostly $18 to $20 each for shipping, so could cost me up to $68. That's okay...willing to pay that, but if you got yours at $48 with shipping included, you got a hell of a deal.
