Hi!

Yes I have had that problem before with my 2000 Protegé and it was the heat shield (replaced under warranty). I was told by the dealer that the newer models do not have a heat shield anymore. ....not sure if it is just the newer Canadian models that don't have it.

Good luck!

yes we do....we all have a heat shield over the exhaust manifold.... AND its a common occurance for one of the three bolts that hold on the top of it to fall out!!! the one on the drivers side seems to come loose and fall out on MANY MANY newer pro's. Seen it many many times, and its always the same bolt.

my 99 es is also making some engine noise...but it seems to be when i accelerate and usually only when i just turn on the engine and drive aorund for a few minutes. it is also a metallic kind of rattling sound that only lasts a sec or two.. could it be the same thing?

I'm not an expert but I think it might be heatshield. Mine first started when I was coming back to town after a 3 hour drive. It was a very faint metallic sound ...almost as if air was getting blown through a hole in a tin can ...it only did it when I accelerated and only for a second.

My heatshield was not missing any bolts but instead was rusted out.

I just took it to the dealer then took one of the mechanics for a drive ...he did hear it too.

It was replaced under warranty.
I also had my ignition wires and coil pack replaced after the check engine light came on. It's running great now.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, i just checked, and that same bolt is missing on my car too.

Is this really important and should be replaced ASAP??

or can it wait until next time i go to the dealer for something?

I would make sure the other two are tight....and get a replacement next time you think of it....
