Oil filter and oil

What brand of oil filter do you use? I am coming close to my 600 mile mark on my P5, and I want to change the oil/filter.

My friend recommends Mobil1 synthetic, and he uses motorcraft (ford) filters since he has a stang.

I want to use Mobil1 synthetic, but what brand of filter? Is it worth buying Mazda filters from the dealer? Does anyone know a place on the net that sells Mazda approved filters?

tnks in advance

Sorry, i read about the filters, but its not very clear about the oil.

Is synthetic best to use in a new car, or wait until it gets a certain milage?

I have to second Richard...the Mazda filters have some features which the engine design depend on. Take it from someone who went through HLA hell with his '93 Miata...

PS - Don't EVER use Fram on a Mazda. Ever.

I will be using Purolator Pure One ,it's a great oil filter and for $4.99 you can't go wrong.
Motorcraft is ok too.
Who builds filters for Mazda? (Champion?)

Purolator builds filters for Motorcraft and others and Pure One is just like Motorcraft except it's build with better material and is designed for better filtering.(largest filtering area)
I don't think Mazda filters were designed to use with synthetic engine oil, Mobil1, K&N, Pure One are build with tougher than paper, synthetic filtering nets, what makes them more durable for longer oil life (5-7K miles that good synthetics can easliy make)
Reg. oil filters are not build as though and I would not feel safe keeping them in for 7.5K miles that Amsoil will make.

Mazdastuff.com quotes me $4.25 plus s/h for the Mazda oil filter. My local dealer quotes me $6.35 plus 8.5% tax. Are these prices about right? or does anyone know a cheaper place on the net to get Mazda oil filters?

Try Trussville Mazda (formerly Roebuck Mazda) as they sell tons of stuff over the net...have for years to the Miata crowd. The web address shouldn't be that hard to find.
I went to their site, but the pull-down menus where screwed up. Ask for year, i put 2002, then Make, and there where no makes... couldnt search without a make it said. Anyone else have trouble with that site?

Hi guys. Thought I'd join in on this discussion and throw in my newbie 1/2 cent worth.
I've got a 94 LX with almost 132,000 miles on it. Been using Castrol 5W-30 and Fram oil filters since day one when I bought it in '97 with 88,000 miles on it. Not one problem with her. Only routine maintenance. Is there really that much difference with an OEM filter and a normal one? I've read the comparisons and what not, yet I've never had any trouble. Fram and Penske, sometimes Castrol, are all my family has ever used.

Just wondering.

Hope it helps...
After reading through that website, I think I'd go with the Mobil 1 filter as I use Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil and it will probably be better at filtering that oil. Just don't know where the heck I can find a Mobil 1 oil filter here in Quebec!

pro-slug, re-read the thread.

Back on topic, I use Mobil1 M1-110 filter (the one meant for Mazda V6's) and I have good peace of mind with it. The M1-108 is the one meant specifically for our engines.

In my area, AutoZone sells them.
