If you don't have one already, you may want to invest in an Import Car filter wrench remover. Our car's filter is very small and I found the wrench at autozone for about $8. It adjust in size and helped a great deal when removing the filter cause there is not much room under there to remove the filter. Any 10W-30 oil will work on our car's, it comes down to your choice of brand.

DO NOT...I REPEAT DO NOT pay $8 for one of those wrenches!!!!

get a filter....go to Wal-Mart.....they sell the CORRECT oil filter socket for $3!! it has a 3/8's inch drive for your ratchet....and it works just like a regular socket...fits right on the end of the filter....I used it just a week ago on my wife's P-5 for her FIRST oil change...and had NO PROBMLEM at all removing the filter.

Oil Filter Location

I am coming up on 3000 miles and was wondering if it was true that you need a special tool to reinstall an oil filter on a Protege5. I have not changed oil on a whole lot of different cars and the only cars I delt with had the filter mounted vertically close to the bottom of the frame. i guess the p5 filter is mounted way up horizontally on the engine or something (I could not see it while I was under it, I did not have a light)

Anyway, anyone changed it yet? I got plenty of new Mobil 1 left over from my old Probe Gt and the dealership is about 45 miles away.

This belongs in the maintenance area, not performance.

Sorry guys about the throwing this thread in the wrong area

Thanks guys for the input.

I thought the probes filters would work but the the GT had 2.5L V6 so the filters are a little longer than the P5's. Anyway thanks a lot

i bought one of these after my regular oil filter wrench didn't work because it was too big. let me tell you, that damn 'mazda gorilla' did his job right, and only the wonders of some channellocks got the original filter off my car. after that, the oil filter socket Sir Nuke talks about works just fine :]

I guess the day my car was built the Mazda Gorilla had the day off. The filter came off with no problems. wasn't any harder to remove than one that I had put on.

I'm with you - Sometimes the original filter is pretty hard to get off, but after that, I do all the changes and I put the filters on by hand and I can always take them off by hand as well - No filter wrench needed.
