OOPS! aka P5 offroad capabilities
Well, my wife and son were off to a family reuion in northern Michigan. Now we knew that to get where we were going required going down a 2-track road. We had been there before a few years back and knew it wasn't too bad. We got a little off course due to some bad advice from my (ahem) navigator. We did find a 2 track we deemed could be the one. IT was basically 3-4 inches of wet sand and after about a half mile I knew it was not the right 2-track. I did not want to stop for fear of getting stuck so we carried on. On a fairly steep downhill I noticed a wall to wall puddle 10-12 feet across, couldn't tell the depth (best after the fact gues is 8-10 inches). My choices were 1)stop on the downhill and reverse for a half mile, 2) go slow and hope we don't hydro lock the engine due to the low intake 3) blast thru and keep left so the intake side stays highest. I picked #3. It worked! Continuing on we had to do this for 2 more puddles in gullies. A cringe and a prayer pulled us through. When we got out of the woods to a clearing it was obvious we were in the wrong place. Turn around and back again. Branches and brush scrubbing the driver's side again at all 3 puddles as I tried to keep the intake out of the water. Once we hit the main (dirt) road, I told my (ahem) navigator that we would wash the car once we back on track to the real location. She asked why. I said you see all the mud dripping off the side mirrors? When we got to a car wash I really wished I had my camera. It looked just like a sport ute ad. When my car was clean again and I knew I didn't scratch her up I laughed and said, You know what, We just did more off roading the 90% of SUV owners! God those dunlops are amazing, even after 14,000 miles!

Last September I used my excellent navagation skills (and lackluster map reading skills) and ended up driving over Sandia Mountain in New Mexico on a wonderful two-track in my 2000 Protege LX. My wife wouldn't let me pretend to be Colin McRae, so we didn't have any heroics, just a nice drive up and down the mountain.. What struck me as funny was some of the other cars and people we encountered out in the middle of nowhere.. We stopped on a turnout to take a picture, and watched a Lincoln drive by, and a lemon yellow Chevette ripped by, looking like Tommi Makkinen at full steam (that is if he drove a Chevette)..
Beautiful views, fresh air, and the Pro handled it like a dream..

I'm amazed at the people I see when I take my cherokee into the state forest by me. Last time I was out I seen a buick centry in the middle of nowhere. I had seen them after I descended a very sandy hill. I highly doubt they made it up. If I ever seen a vette I think I'd have to get out and ask what street coner he got the smack from.
