Is the P5 a wagon or a hatchback?

Is the P5 a wagon or a hatchback? This is the discussion I have with a friend regularly. See I have a '99 DkBlue LX-touring and she has a '02 Yellow P5.
So I decided to ask the professionals .

P.S.-> for Doreen...

IMHO, it's a really, really short wagon. A true hatchback would have a "lip" between the rear galss and the back of the car (ala a Ford Probe). In a hatchback, the rear glass faces more towards the sky (like the MX-3) and less towards the back (like an SUV). The rear glass on the P5 faces the rear of the car, not the sky and it has no lip, hence it is a wagon my friend.

The Subaru Imprezza is more of a hatch back than the P5 simply because it has a tiny lip, but its still a wagon as well. In fact, I can't think of any 5-door that I would consider to be a hatchback instead of a wagon.

Simply put:

Wagon => a four door car with a hatch

Hatchback => 2 door car with a hatch

in most cases yes.

Focus ZX5 however is a 4 door hatch. and the Focus wagon is well... a Wagon.

So the RSX, Celica, etc are hatches? Not coupes?

I heard from magazines that a true wagon has a longer roof than its sedan or coupe counterpart. hatchbacks are only called that because of hatch in the back rather than trunk deck lid. any car that has a window and trunklid connected that lift as one could be considered a "hatchback". I think the P5 is a wagon and a hatchback. Its roof is a little longer than the sedans. I have read and heard people refer to ZX 5's and Golfs as wagons as well as hatchbacks. Wagon or Hatchback it still handles good and looks awesome

I think that just refers to the amount of doors, so I guess they are both.

As Mazda states, the Protege5 is considered as "SPORT WAGON."
Hover the vehicle range on their website and it shows... Woolala...

I consider it a 4-door hatchback, just like the 4door Golf hatchback.

I feel its a hatch back b/c I consider it to short for a wagon. Plus I think hatch back sounds cooler.

Hatchback because it's sold here in Europe as a HB.

Not this dumb question again. My response: Who gives a $%^& ??
By the way, I call it a hatchback. But you can call it what you want. There must be more important things to discuss/debate.

Not correct. For example, I used to own a a 1987 Acura Integra 5 door. And this model was referred to as a hatchback... nobody would ever have called it a wagon. 5 door hatchbacks sort of disapperared for over 10 years after that.

My car is like the P5 and here it's called "Allegro Hatchback", the protege sedan is called "Allegro".

Chalk one up to the hatchbacks.
