Okay, this thread has been dead for over a month.
Any of you "sucky gas mileage guys" find resolution yet?
I took the P5 into the dealer today to get my window repaired, for some reason it wouldn't go down all the way. I asked the service consultant to look into my sucky gas mileage situation and he asked, "how fast do you drive on the highway?" I replied, "about 70-75mph." Then he said that was the problem.
Last weekend we drove out to Omaha and back. 99% freeway cruise set to 70mph. Still only 25 mpg.
What speed do you guys with "better" gas mileage (~30mpg) drive on the highway?

As for city driving, i only get about 21-23 mpg average. This is mainly because I drive in stop and go traffic 95% of the time.

withOUT a doubt GNO...YOUR dealer was looking for a reason to NOT do anything...and blew smoke up your butt......
I cruise at 80 and still get better than you do. I have never done any distance driving yet where ALL of it was on the highway...but when I curise the highway...its at 80....and my combined milage is still 27!

I also had to have my window fixed. Driver's window didn't go down all the way. The dealer said it's a plastic clip that falls into the track. It's about a 20 minute fix for them and it's evidently fairly common. If that's the only thing that breaks on this car I'll be totally happy.
As for the gas mileage, I averaged right around 29MPG for the first few months we had the car. Then I put in a drop in K&N and drove it for about another 3 weeks or so and watched the mileage. Went up to around 30. I don't drive terribly conservative as I like to zip around corners and the tach sees the upper side of 6K at least a couple times a day.
I noticed that the intake doesn't seem to have a path to get air to the inlet. I modified my grill support (for info see 3rd gen forum under 'restricted intake fix') so that cool air coming in through the grill would be able to reach the air inlet. I reset the ECU (leaving the battery disconnected for a few hours resets it also) and drove it around quite a bit the next day. The mileage now is right around 31.5 MPG and has gotten as high as 33.5 on longer trips. I cruise between 70-75 MPH on the trips. Much better throttle response and power also. Pulls hard all the way to redline now instead of feeling like the power curve stopped at 6000.

Couldn't the addition of MTBE in pump gas be affecting everyone's numbers? I know that here in New Yawk, MTBE is added to the gas - it is supposed to reduce emissions during certain times of the year (winter, I think) and is supposedly only in the gas during those months.
There have been tons of reports of suffering gas mileage due to the MTBE additives, leading critics to say that the net result is zero - that the reduced gas mileage negates any positive environmental effect created by reducing emissions.
Anyway, this could have a major effect on everyone's mileage figures, and should be taken into account when doing comparisons.

I was thinking the same thing about the fuel additives. Illinois uses Ethanol which is also said to reduce gas mileage making it nothing but a form of welfare for corn farmers. Illinois has a winter and summer blend gasoline. So far I think it has all been using the "Winter Blend" formula. Hopefully it will get better in the summer.
I keep a detailed log on my car and have averaged 23MPG in 7500 miles of driving. I have never averaged above 25MPG even with all highway driving and the cruise @74MPH. In the city I've seen it as low as 17 MPG. I don't drive particularily fast and usually shift between 3000 and 4000 rpm.
I rate my P5 C- in fuel mileage. I am hoping it gets better with age. I also wonder if it's possible that some engines may have a longer break-in period than others.

New MPG high...
I usually get between 28-32 MPG in my 5-speed P5 (13k miles). That is in mixed driving.
This weekend I made the trip to my wife's folks's house in Maine. 3.5 hours each way, about 60% highway, and 40% fast 2 lanes (Rt. 4 & 202, 45-55mph)
On regular 87 octane gas, I got 34 MPG.
I kept the HVAC in fan positions that kept the AC Compressor off, and I think that made a difference. Anyway... just thought I'd brag.

Good #'s so far a little better would be nice but what the hell...

some of you say you used up like 8.7 gallons, then 9.2 gallons, then 10.2 gallons, and so on. how do you guys accurately measure how much gallons you used up? because i dont think the gas gauge goes down consistently.
#58
I keep track of the mileage at the time of each fill-up. The number of gallons is the amount to fill the tank. So I am starting with a full tank and the number of gallons is the amount to make the tank full again. It is not possible to get an accurate estimate using a fuel guage or if you are not filling the tank up(buying $10.00 or $5.00 or whatever)

It Worked!
I purchased my car in august and since 1 month old I have been getting 18-24 mpg. I took what everyone else talked about into consideration. I almost always used sunoco 94. The other day I filled my car up with 87 for the first time. Went home disconnected the battery and let it sit over night. Today I filled it back up and 338miles used 10.213 gallons which gives me 33.09mpg. YES, I'm Very Happy I drove the same way I always do. Hopefully It only gets better!!!
