You know, I'm havin the same problem with my 1999 Protege ES. At 30,000 miles (1,000) more then I bought it with in March 2002) I had to have the catalytic converter changed due to "it being clogged." Hah! My car was bogging down after start and then loss of power which someone else also descirbed as "starting in 4th gear." I also had the problem of it dying. Well anyway, it was replaced in June and again just in August! What is up with that!?! Well, either Mazda technicians don't know how to fix cars or all of our protege's have the same problem which has not been corrected. If we start sending letters to Mazda USA do you think they might look into it? Well my problem has proceded so I have an appointment tomorrow to possibly have it replaced again. I am a big fan of Mazda's but me bein g a 16 year-old kid, I do not recommend any Mazda product at this point in time. I have turned all of my friends and family away and told them to buy something else. Eh, whatever though, (mayne people will dislike me for this comment but,) PR5's may be able to handle well but for 19g's i'll gladly take an SVT Focus and run circles around it. So until Mazda gets some guts to MASS produce a Hot rod or at least more powerful ride with the handling of the PR5 I will not own another Mazda. I know you'll say there's the MP3 and the Mazdaspeed... I said MASS PRODUCE. Hand me the keys to a Sentra SE-R Spec-V for now and then when Mazda fixes some of the minor flaws they have... Hand me back the keys to my classic red baby.
I know many of you are going to say I don't appreciate what I have. I do but if it doesn't run it's no use to me. I love my car, even is it is a 99. They're great little cars with awesome handling but no guts. I'm sure I'll be completely fixed once this thing if fixed

premdrumusr, you spent $19 large for a 99 ES???? geeze man they were on the lot in S. Florida for 14,500.
Secondly, you and Rachael are the only cases i've ever heard of so ALL our Pro's don't have the problem or there would be a recall. You also have to remember that every car ever built has had parts recalled or just go bad.
BTW Mazdaspeed protege AND the SPEC V will both be limited production. And if i'm not mistaken both will be limited to 2000.
Like you said minor flaws. Stick this in your pipe and smoke it: The Focus SVT is under numerous recalls right now, one major one is the throtte. At WOT (that's wide open throttle) a clip snags the throttle wire and keeps the thing at WOT. I hope you do get the Focus so you can come crawling back here in 3 months when you have to tow the thing all over town.
Maybe it's time you stopped being a 16 year old kid and wake up to the real world where things ALWAYS go to ****. I'm sorry you have problems but that's no reason to cry all over the board about your poor life.
