Protege5 price in Canada

Hi guys...

I am almost sure that I am going to buy a P5 this Friday... if I can get a good price for it.

My question is: what's a good price ? Unfortunately, there is only one Mazda dealer in my city.

The price the dealer quoted me is CDN $23,950 plus tax.

Which is comprised of the following:

1 M.R.S.P. for a 2002 silver P5 w/ auto transmission, AC, and sunroof
2. Freight and Pre-Delivery Inspection Charges
3. Tire Tax and Air Conditioning Tax
4. Floor Mats
5. Block Heater
6. Full Tank of Gas

What price should I ask for ?

thank you very much

That seems to be a good price. Mine was $22,515 but it's a 5-Speed. I know that carpeted floormats come standard and I don't know anythiing about a tire tax. I didn't haggle on the price but I did ask if they would throw in a couple accessories
like the chip guard($250), wheel locks($30) and cargo net$(30) and they readily agreed. But I'm still kicking myself for not asking for the Mazdaspeed muffler!
Where in the country are you that you need a block heater?

The best way to know if you are getting a fair deal is to get the sales person to break that price down into each individual item. So start with $19895 list for the car and add $1000 for Auto and $1000 for Air and $800 for moonrof etc. Then you will be able to see if there are any 'hidden' or outrageous charges. Tnen you should be able to go for $1000 or so off list. Floor mats are standard on P5s, so there should be no charge for that. My car was the same as yours without moonroof or block heater, and after haggling for the $1000 off it came to 22,200 with everything else you mentioned but before taxes...so with moonroof it would have been 23K, so that would be a number I would shoot for for your car....

I thought the sunroof was only a $600 option??

And the block heater should be done for free at any dealership, (at least mine was)... And that's what I paid too 22,200 /w air, 5spd, sunroof...

sjd...
you don't need a block heater???

Hell, offer em 22,200 and start from there.... can't hurt

Always haggle for $1000 off, or at least make it so you don't have the Pdi/Frieght which is at least $1000. Never pay the Msrp + tax.

I paid $21 775; that included auto and sunroof (basically loaded). I bought in June...there appears to be a huge clearance going on in Ottawa currently so there are deals to be had on 2K2's. I think they are gearing up for the 2003 which should include the auto stick and leather options...if that interests you.

I knew that they were working on a $1500 mark-up over cost from the mrsp of $22 800 loaded...so I figured they have to make something on the deal...

b.t.w. the 'free' full of gas, I paid $15.00

they threw the wheel locks in 'gratis'

keep us informed of your progress...

huy397,

Sounds like the dealer is charging you full retail (or almost) - my salesman offered me about 1000$ off list (list price is available from the Mazda website) before I even said anything. So I paid 21300$ for Silver Protege with AC and moonroof. However, there are a few Mazda dealers in Vancouver, and it was the end of the month and he had about 30 P5s in the lot.

First of all, thank you everyone for being so helpful!

I did what frankd mentioned, the price come out to be $23590
( MRSP+AC+AT+moonroof+Freight & PDI)

So it looks like there's a $400 for everything else.

take out $40 for gas, $100 or so for AC tax... so it's something like $260 for the "extra stuff"

I guess I'll start from $22000 and go from there

Another thing... what accessories should I get/bargain for?

thanks everyone!

Whatever accessories you think you'll need the most. Like I said I wish I had the Mazdaspeed muffler. I thought I was going to get an exhaust but decided I don't want to drop $1000 on one.

I live 45min north of Toronto, I've never needed a block heater.
I'm originally from Yorkton, so if I still lived there I would need a block heater!

First, I say check out this Site: http://www.carbuyingtips.com there is tons of useful info on buying a new car. Second I say start low, be outragous, the worst they can say is no and make you go up from there, the best that can happen is they will say yes. Stick to your guns, they want to sell you the car as bad as you want to buy it. And after the deal, then start saying, "oh I forgot I wanted the cargo tray too" or "well, if you throw in the moonroof wind deflector then I'll take it." This is how I got my P5 with Sport-matic, moonroof(with deflector), cargo tray and rear step guard for 16,000 US.
Third, what the hell is a block heater, I live in Florida so I guess we don't see much of them around here.
Good Luck and stand firm!!!

In the US you get the tank of gas free with any Mazda. And if you park your car outside and its less than 10* F then a block heater is something you should get. It will pollute less and is better for your engine.

My girlfriend is looking at buying a P5 when the new blue color comes out. She qualifies for the $750 grad rebate and will probably be able to get the $400 in stock discount. Do you think we could still negotiate for less than invoice and still get these rebates??

Never heard of a '$400 in stock discount' here. At $1150 off list they are making close to 0 on the deal... and the low rate financing could easily be worth $500 or more depending on how much you finance. But I guess if the dealer lot is full of P5s, and you have the nerve, you could try for lower...

Yeah I never heard of this before either. The sales manager actually told us about this so I am pretty sure it is accurate. He even told us we could put a $500 down payment on a laser blue P5 and when they arrive since the one he gets in stock will be spoken for by us we could still get that $400 off... So this is a good deal then eh?
