Question About Factory Service Tools

I went to my local Mazda dealer to pick up a few parts. While there, I decided to buy an oil filter wrench part no. 49 G014 001. I know I could get one at PEP Boys for less money but since I was at the dealer I figured it would be more convenient to just get one there. I was told Mazda doesn't sell factory tools to customers, only to dealers. I pointed out that the tool is listed in my FSM and therefore ought to be available but I was still refused. It seems to me that if the dealer can order one for his mechanics he can order one for a customer.

Is it true that Mazda has a policy of not selling factory tools to customers or was my dealer just handing me a line?

Thank you for the information TheMAN. The Sears wrench sounds ideal and I'll look into it.

I bought a graphite one from Wal-mart and have had no luck with it on the mazda filter. It fits good in hand but when there is any pressure to turn it, it pops off and then back on again (skips). I ended up using a wrench with a band. Let me know if the sears one is better. Hey The Man is it made out of steel or plastic/graphite and what is the model number.

using sears web site you'll find

three finger wrench
or
two finger wrench

i have used the latter for about 12 years now for almost every oil change that i need a wrench for. if you don't tighten the filter so tight it will come off by hand.

Thanks for the info Tom Slick. I always put them on hand tight and can usually get them off by hand however on the P5 it's in an akward spot and I kept touching my arm on the exhaust. Maybe I'll build a garage with a hoist, then it would be easier all around.
