Replace Muffler - 4 an '02 Pro (HELP)

HEy Guys - Newbi to this site

I bought a 2002 PRotege ES from the neighbor (bank was going to reposes his car) for a steal.
He had added a sport muffler to the car and someone has stolen the can. they cut it off using a hack saw. My question to anyone here is what would be a good aftermarket muffler be. I am not looking to spend a ton of cash for the replacement but I do wan tot get the benifit of the free flow exhaust and utilize the CAI it still has installed. any help here would be great.

I noticed the thread previous about the Ebay mufflers. but which one would be worth spending the money on.

thanks

just about any universal muffler will fit. You can also look at getting A cat-back set-up. Magnaflow has a system. You can also try Racing Beat. I'm sure there are others if you search for them.

Are the Ebay muffler cans worth the $36 or are the junk. A stock muffler from Midas will cost me $25 just for the muffler.

I have sen that the HSK's are good but like I said before, I am not interested in a full system. this is going to be my daily driver and I don't really want to make this an Import Street racer.

This statement does'nt make any sense if you are going to make it your dailydriver then just get a muffler. Just adding a muffler is not going to give you any gains. But if you want to make it an Import Street Racer then I would suggest on getting the best of the best a good muffler w/ a whole system and headers w/ a hi-flow cat since doing this will give you hp gains.

Sorry, I was thinking faster than I was typing.

I was just figuring that if I have to put a new muffler on, why not put somthing on for pennies more that will hopfully give me a little better gas mileage and a neater sound. I am not interested in putting on a full exhaust. Not worth the money for a daily driver.

Again are the ebay mufflers for the $25 - $40 + shipping worth the buying. Or are are they just junk??

I would suggest getting one from midas rather than ebay because at least there you can prob get some kind of guarantee and it will only cost you about $25. If you want to try out the ebay mufflers go ahead and be my guest, I would be ill advised on most of them if you do get one try to see if it looks legit. But if one on ebay is going to cost you more than $100 bucks just save up and get a name brand muffler.

Those are all good exhaust systems, however there is Racing Beat, Bosal, Borla, Mangnaflow. I will be getting a borla exhaust system based on price, performance, and looks. Borla does not make their exhaust tip humongous like that of HKS, Skunk 2, Apexi, Greddy, etc... The overall look is stock looking and it also comes w/a resonator to get rid of the Honda Civic sounding clatter that you hear w/an exhaust system made to handle something w/more power.

I have the srmotorsports cat back exhaust and the exhaust is very nice. the tip is only three inches wide, so you really can not tell if it is aftermarket, and it sounds really nice. if you want to take a look at it, it is at www.srmotorsprorts.com/protege.htm

Yeah those exhuast systems are also very good, especially maganaflow. It all depends on your taste just stir clear of those ghetto e-bay mufflers and chips and intakes; Most of the time they only sale crap on e-bay, rarely do they have something worth buying.

HKS, A'pexi, Greddy, 5zigen, etc. are mostly Japanese companies with respected products, and get a head start on R&D, and testing on Japanese cars, such as the past generations of Lancer Evos.
Another example, but offtrack: ("Tein accounts for about 60-percent of aftermarket suspension products sold in all of Japan, and 90-percent of total production is consumed domestically [in Japan]" --Sport Compact Car Nov '02)
Some but not all of the best and most-trusted tuners of Japan are unheard of in the USA.

So no, they are not "knockoffs" as you asked.

They don't only produce cat-back systems, which you seem to be under the impression. They do make universal mufflers, but a Midas muffler is much cheaper if all you want is sound and look.

(Before I get flamed: This is not to say American or European tuners, such as Injen, Magnaflow, Skunk2, Remus, etc. have a lesser product. I myself like the brands I have listed and have American parts on my Hiroshima-born baby).

If you are just looking for a muffler with a sportier sound, why not get the Mazdaspeed one sold by the dealer? You can buy it from:

Thanks for the help guys, but I think that most of you are not getting what I am looking for. I am not willing to pay $200+ for a muffler no matter where I get it or who makes it. that is why I ask if the $36 mufflers on Ebay are worth the money or if they are jusnk and will fall apart with in a year. If they are junk, I will just end up going to Midas and get a cheapie.
