Resale Value of Protege5?!?!
I noticed that the Protege ES go for near half the price after a year on the 2001.
Would it be the same for Protege5? Would I buy it for $19k (after tax) and if I want to sell it a year later, would it be around $10k?
I noticed Civics and Corollas don't lose much value after a year. You can pretty much get everything back. Why is Mazda not like that?

Protege's don't lose that much up here. And the stylin' of the P5 will be wanted I am sure. Just work on that 140 ponies under the hood.
Peace Out

95% of cars lose value fairly quickly in the first few years. Most cars lose ~10% or so when you drive them off the lot. Hondas are probably more popular as used cars than Mazdas are for the most part. Far more people are familar with them and purchase them in the first place, so it only stands to reason that would continue when they are used. Cars depreciate in value, get used to it, it's a fact of life. Some do so faster than others, especially in different regions of the country. Try buying a used Honda Civic in the southern California area. That's about the best any small econo or econo-sport car will hold it's value. Don't buy any new car as an investment.

The rest of your post is based on a premise taht is not correct. If you check the price of a new ES and the value of a one-year old ES in Kelly Blue Book you will find that the depreciation is nowhere near 50%. It wouldn't even be close to 50% if you compare MSRP on new to trade-in on used.

Actually four year old Proteges are going for about 12,000$, CDN that is, and since I will end up paying about 20,000$ for mine, that's not too bad, 4 year old Civics are going for about 15,000$ but you have to remember that their rates are as high as the banks, something like 7.9% so in the end it all balances out

Keep in mind that the purchase price of a 1997 ES was less than the current purchase price of a 2001, so the depreciation is less than 40% over four years relative to the original purchase price.

I noticed this as well when I was shopping. I am banking on the fact that the P5 will be more popular of a car and will retain its value more than the other cars. You can tell that it is worse when you look at residuals for leasing. If you compare the residuals of the P5 with that of, say a Subary Impreza 2.5 RS, you see that there is a significant difference. The Subaru will only deprecate about to about 40% of it's initial value over 5 years whereas the P5 is guessed to deprecate about 33% of it's initial value. (This is from MSRP retail to used wholesale value)
This depends a lot on where you live but in general it seems that the Mazda Protege depreciates more. I suspect it's mainly demand and image. The Mazda's are generally seen to be not as reliable as Honda's. Parts are less available because there are less of them around so theoretically it could be more expensive to repair them.
I always suspected that the Subaru would hold it's value because the AWD holds it's value well. I don't think that Subaru is overly well known for it's reliability.
Overall, I say that the P5 will depreciate less than it's older siblings. This will be due to the fact that it is a different car. It is well built and hopefully it will be popular so there should be parts around for it.
