resonating noise at 40km/h in 1st

buts seriously, there is no way in hell that all manufacturers base performance off of a stupid 0-60 time, hell if thats all the car company focuses on, the performance of the car will suffer.
also, 60mph in second gear isnt nessisarily true, sure i havent tried, but thatd be pushing far into redline..... even on my friends eclipse you have to push 2k over redline to hit 60.....so this is also untrue
would someone like to back me up here?
sorry, but where the hell did you pull that info from?

most cars are designed to top out at 100km/h(62mph), in second gear. this is done so that the car can reach that speed without having to shift to third gear. this gives it a quicker 0-60 time, which is what manufactureres use to tell the performance of their vehicles.

exactly what i thought..... sure if they tuned it a bit diffrently we could get to 60 quicker, but then we would have a bad gear ratio and such..... loosing power through our gears much like ive heard that is a problem in the celicas. 0-60 performance means jack crap....
so how bout shifting, and we'll forget about this.

i meant that 0-60 times are what manufacturers use to tell the customer the performance of their vehicle. hard-core companies like subaru in japan make the wrx with a close ratio tranny, and so duz the honda type-r there. both these cars top out at around 80km/h in second

sorry to interrupt you guys.
I had the same problem with my 1.8L
but about a month after i had the car, whenever i reached a certain (high) rpm,I would hear strange noises.
I thought it came from the engine, but i couldnt believe that a mazda engine would fail that easily.
I took the car to a muffler specialist and told him to tear away the heat shield right under the car,not the one you see under the hood. He just tore it apart, and I have not experienced that bad sound again, ever.
I guarantee you that the sound you are hearing is just a stupid vibration coming from under your car.
Please trust me,it has absolutely nothing to do with you engine.
Anyway at any rpm I think my engine has a rather pleasant sound.

I have the auto tranny and at full throttle the car shifts into 3rd after it has passed 100 km/h(62 mph). It shifts around 6200 RPM. Of course, I've never held it at those high RPMs.
I know that the 5speed has slightly different ratios but it is true that 99% of cars are geared to reach 60 mph at the very top of 2nd gear. Only great performance cars are gears to shift sooner. That's why a 6 speed RSX type S seems to have a long second gear. It reaches 60 mph in 2 gears and then has 4 more gears for all the speeds above 60. Doesn't sound like the best possible gearing.

Check under your car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thare is a heat shield that is vibrating and it resonates!!!!!
Trust me!!!
it has nothing to do with your 0-60 time or gear box!!!!
check it out and tell me if im wrong.
