Shake and noise when A/C is on and car is idle!
Has anyone else come across this: (Protege 5)
The car is idle and has warmed up sufficiently, I go to turn the dial to either of the defog settings (which turns on the A/C i believe) and the car starts to "shake" / "rumble" and a "grumble" comes from the engine! The same happens if the A/C is turned on at idle! This is the first time I've had to use either of the settings and the car is less than 600KM's (400miles) old! Will this go away, or would you recommend bringing it to the dealer? We're going on a 1900 KM (1300mile) round trip this coming week. Would you take it through the trip and see what happens or bring it in now?
Also, could someone paste the link to the site that had all of the Protege5 "recalls" (bulletins).
Thanks!

This is normal. When the AC compressor comes on it pulls power from the engine so the engine RPM drops for a second, then the ECU kicks it back up to 750. This causes a shudder and kinda freaked me out at first, but I asked the dealer and he said it was normal.

This shudder lasted longer than a minute and seemed to occur in waves. Even my old Crapolier didn't shake/grumble this bad one the A/C was on.... I'm gonna sit on it for a week and see how it does on my trip....

It could also be the idle air control valve. My ranger did this when the truck was at an idle. You could hear the clutch on the air conditioner kick in and out because IAC valve was dirty (yours will probably not be dirty, but bad). If I let the truck idle it would go on and off about every 10 to 15 seconds. This part controls the idle and revs the engine up when the extra load (air conditioner) is placed on it. Best of luck finding the problem.
