I did the short shifter mod. I have instructions with pictures if anyone wants 'em let me know.
Here are a few pics of my new shifter....sorry no before pic.
The **** is a Ichibahn Aluminum and Leather. I left the shift boot alone. Just push it down into the tunnel and it will look fine. The boot is the same on the MP3 and this is how they did it.

The little **** is for my amp....it adjusts the bass

I may try to put the document on the web so everyone can download it. Maybe if we beg enough Mr. King will put it here?!?!?!?! What do you think?

thats what another of my frieds said.....I will try to send it from my other computer that the file is on as well. The mod is very easy.

1. Take shift **** off
2. Pull plastic around shifter off....easiest way is to open at the cupholder and start pulling there. I don't think you'll break it...I had to pull hard (its great how you can pull everything out with out tools these days.)
3. take the boot off its frame.
4. remove the frame. Some of the screw heads are facing down.
5. Heat up the fat part of the extension on the shifter with a heat gun or propane torch (I used a propane torch as it was quicker; about 15 seconds worth of heating). Its about 1½" wide.
6. Put a screw driver or long allen wrench through the hole in the extension and start twisting it off. Mine pulled the extension off and left the rubber on the shifter.
7. Clean the rubber off the shifter with a carpenter knife or heat the remainder up and pull it off with a rag.
8. start reinstalling all the parts and cap it off with a new shift ****. You can use the stock **** if you have a lathe or grinder to reshape the bottom of the extension so that it will fit in the shifter. I think the aftermarket ***** are a nice change though. You can retain the stock boot as well if you want or get an aftermarket one, or have one made.
****VERY IMPORTANT*****
-put a rag down when you start heating and removing the rubber....you don't want that down in the shifter....You'll see all the lubrication and IT WILL GET STUCK IN THERE!!!!
-when you grab the extension to remove it use a towel or something so you don't burn your hand.
-don't plan on getting the MP3 shift **** unless you have a friend that works there. My friend checked on his price for me (Mazda mechanic at the dealership where i bought my car; he bought my Kawasaki ZX6R Ninja; That reminds me how slow my Protege 5 is....I miss my bike.) and his price was nearly $200 and the regular price was over $300....ridiculous.

There you guy go.....have fun!!!
