Why not get a group of us to email Mazda on a certain date, that would also grab their attention!

Dear Mazda,

When starting my Mazda in the morning, there is a very noticeable “RATTLE” sound coming from the engine. Once the car gets to a warm operating temperature the sound subsides. It is consistent on every cool morning, and since I am in a cold climate during the winter months, I hear this noise EVERY single morning. It is not a normal sound and I have never witnessed such a sound on any of my previous vehicles, including a Mazda B2200 truck I used to drive. The “RATTLE” becomes noticeably louder as the RPMs are brought between 2000 and 2500 RPM.

Something has to be done about this problem ASAP, I know of many other Mazda Protégé owners ( both sedan and P5 models ) that are experiencing the same problem and we are all getting very frustrated. This sort of noise is bound to destroy an engine prematurely, and I did not pay over $20,000 to have this happen to me.

I'm in for this as well. I had never noticed the rattle until this evening even though there has been some controversey over it for a while. Are most peoples cars stock or do they have any engine or exhaust mods? I only have an AEM intake; however I have all of the stock intake parts and will put them back on if needed......

 

Mine is stock bare to its bones. I too am in a cold climate and have the same problem. You can expect to see my letter very shortly.
Has everyone actualy contacted their dealers? I havn't yet but I will this coming week.

This sounds like a great idea, together we can stage an enormous voice. Here is your chance to get something done about your investment, why not get on board so that the reputation of these cars can stay high and our resale values as well.

 

I've got the same rattle. Been to the dealer twice for it, they never hear it. It's been there from just about the beginning and still going. I noticed it IS starting to last into the time the engine's warm. I bought it in August the day it arrived and has about 10,300 miles now. The rear window molding is warped (still trying to get a good condition from Mazda, we've gone through 2 moldings so far). The front end also bounces at times shifting into first with the Rpm's remaining constant. They've reprogrammed my comp saying there's a calibration problem people have reported, though this has not fixed the problem. It SEEMS more sublte now, but may just be a placebo.

Do the lemon laws cover things like this?

 

Btw, the slow moving "buck" (2nd gear coast to acceleration buck) has been fixed by reprogramming the ECU.

 

I've got an appointment with my dealer on Thursday morning. I'll let you know if anything interesting happens.

 

I have asked this before, but still dont understand what exactly is the "buck" that people are referring to? Is this common on all Proteges? Has anyone experience any other problems since there ECU was reprogrammed?

 

Seems like recent protege5 buyers haven't complained much. Any recent buyers still having the rattle problem? Could the problem have been fixed?

 

Just my two cents here, but it seems the rattle is only happening on cold engines. (My 2002 Canadian P5 with 2582 KM makes no such noise.) As such, I think it's something to do with lack of oil in the engine. Are you guys all parking your cars outside on those cold nights, with 20W-50? Hope not, or that oil won't reach the cams for a LONG while! I park my car in a heated garage, and it's never outside for more than 4 hours at a time. That sound really seems to me like the cams aren't getting enough oil on them, and as such the "ticking" at 2700 RPM...

Anyone else have something to contribute here?

 

I called Mazda today and complained now that I know other people are hacked off too. They said they know about and are working on a fix. A TSB (technical service bulletin) will go out to the dealerships once they have the fix and we will all be eligible to have it fixed under warranty. Lets hope they hurry up!

I park outside, and I only seem to hear it once and a while, and it sounds like the header heat shield rattling??

Nope. It's an internal noise. I don't know about you, but I tried to take the heat shield off once, and I ended up breaking one of the bolts the damn thing was on so tight! I seriously think it's the cams. The ticking sounds identical to that of cams when they're not yet lubricated. Can you describe your noise a little more?
