Question Telescopic steering wheel

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if it's possible to modify the Protege's steering column to allow telescopic adjustment? I need to bring the steering wheel about 2 inches closer to the driver's seat to get a more comfortable position. I have a 2001 ES with the 4-spoke 380 mm steering wheel.

I've searched the FAQ, the forums, Google, etc. but I can't find anything. Seems like every hit I get is for the Mazda6. Maybe it's a hint for me to buy one.

If there is no such modification, I suppose my last option is to install an aftermarket steering wheel and find a hub adapter/spacer to achieve the same result. I don't know if it's legal to remove the airbag though (I live in Toronto).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Removing the air bag is legal as long as you do it yourself.

MP5Navy on toprotege has installed a Sparco wheel .. thought I'm not sure he's written a HOWTO yet.
