is there a LIMIT
#16
There has to be. even in my R/T, with the stock PCM the limiter was 130, but I only ever bounced off it once...and it was with a good amount of road. Now with the Mopar PCM, i think it's a bit higher (135-140), but I doubt I'll ever get there, cuz of drag.

Drag Coefficient and Mysterious 5th gear on Automatic P5
FYI, the speed limiter works but cutting off gasoline supply to the engine even when the gas pedal is depressed. But I agree that aerodynamic resistance is the main factor in limiting top speed, given the relatively high CD of the P5 of 0.33 due to the body kit. I think the other 3rd-gen Proteges have lower CDs. My mom's Camry has a CD of 0.30 only and the new one is 0.27. I think Mazda could have made the P5 more aerodynamic, helping not only top speed but fuel economy as well. But then, maybe the P5 won't look as good as it does now .
Also I took the P5 up to 170km/h once(Yes, I know, nothing compared to what you guys take it up to) and I noticed that the automatic tranny made a shift into what I think was a fifth gear.
I started to apply more gas gradually at 100km/h @ 2800rpm and at about 160km/h @ 6000rpm it made a shift to what a think was a fifth gear? The tach registered back down to 4500rpm after this "shift". Some of you may say the auto tranny used 3rd gear to reach those speeds and at 160km/h it shifted to 4th. But I still find it strange because both my brother who was in the car and I didn't feel any signs of downshift/kickdown when I took it to 170km/h and also can a P5 do 160km/h in third gear?

I think you miscounted or somthing...you had to be in third, there is no "magic" 5th gear...and it should handle it to 160 kph.....which is right at 100 MPH....I did a little math....seeing as how I have a 5-speed and not absoulutely sure that the final drive of a auto is that of a 5-speed, but would assume so....and at 100 MPH the rpm you stated it came "back down to 4500 after the shift" is right for 160 KPH in high gear.

According to our mazda brochure on the P5, the top speed for Auto is 176km/h and MT it's 195km/h. Doesn't state if it's drag limited or governed. But alot of cars have governed speed limiters on them. Imports or Domestic does not matter. Euro imports BMWs, audis, Jags, MBs all have limiters.

My MP3 has been up to 125mph and seemed to be willing to go father. The car was willing but I wasn't That is pretty fast. I know my 93 Honda accord had some sort of a limiter because it would be like hitting top speed with a car on Gran Turismo, you know how it hits the limit..falls and then climbs again to the limit and falls again.

Well Civics have a governor for sure. It doesn't make sense that they would put a governor on some cars and not on others, because then none of the companies would want their cars limited. I know that BMWs are limited at 250 km/h even though german versions can go faster (M5 that is). Jettas are limited electronically too as my friend found out, and supposedly it's pretty scary when you're going about 180, and gas cuts of completely, and your car jerks a little at that speed hehe
In any case, if you were going on a downward slope, and had the wind in your back you could reach a higher speed then the one limited because of the drag coefficient, and maybe you could feel the governor! Somebody try this, but I'm not responsible for any damages or injuries, hehe, j/k
Governor wouldn't be called a governor if it wasn't imposed by the government, and I don't see no reasons why government would be putting them only on some cars and not all cars.
All cars have 'em, my final answer

Whether you'd run into a governor at some higher speed if the car could reach it is an interesting question, but academic, as you say. Perhaps someone who's added plenty of power to their P5 would have an answer.

I got my 2000 1.8L 5 speed up to about 192kph (120mph) before the govenor somewhat violently kicked in. Not as bad as my work truck though. I drive a 2000 Chevy express whith a V-8 Vortec engine in it. The govenor kicks in at 160 kph when the truck is still pulling forward like crazy! It threw me forward towards the steering wheel, I wasn't expecting it at all!
Enough about vans. I think the tach on my Protege was around 5300-5500 RPM. You'll have to exuse me on the less than accurate reading since I was a little busy watching the road at this speed. The engine still felt strong and the car was still accelerating quite nicely. I think without the govenor, the car might have hit around 210-215 KPH by the time you hit the redline. The amazing thing about this was that at this speed, the car felt very stable. No crazy vibrations from the steering wheel or wobbly feeling from the back end.

Govenor would mean it "governs the motor" not necessarily imposed by the government. There are no laws (Canadian or US) stating a govenor is manditory. Its up to the manufacturer.
I've had my P5 up to 195km.(120mph) and no limiter. BUT it was definately running out of steam. From what I've read there is no speed limiter.

Last time and for all-canadian Protege 5 is not governed!!!
Top speed is 135 mph and is gearing limited!!!
you do not have to bother with bypassing speed limiter-to get to that speed you'll need to have about 140 hp at the WHEELS-looong way to go.
