Question transmission...

i need some help on this problem. everytime i press the overdrive button the tranny seems to only shift in 1st and 2nd gear!!! whenever i press the o/d button i usually roll down my windows to listen if the tranny shifts right. so 1st gear shifts =18mph, 2nd gear shifts=35mph...evrything is fine?? but then as i pass the 45mph mark the rpm goes to like 3500 or so, and when i hit 50-55mph the rpm goes to like 4500!! so i have no idea why it isnt shifting right. then i switch back to regular drive and its back to normal...need some help on this one?

ahhh bummer...means i have to go to the dealer again?? btw: my bro(a decent mechanic) checked my tranny fluid and said that fluid was bad. i bought some lucas tranny fix, but he said that it would harm the tranny!!! could it be carbon build up in the converter thats causing shifting problems!!

you have a 4spd automatic if you turn OD off and it it shifts twice it's doing it's job. It's keeping you out of 4th gear alltogether.

when you put the car in D you're in 1st....you accelerate and it shifts once into 2nd.....when it shifts again it'll stay in third and never shift out. The rpms will keep going up until you press the OD button to allow it to shift into 4th.

Is this whats happening in your car? that's what it sounds like.

p.s. not taking care of your scheduled service is plain stupid. If your trans is shot because you failed to take care of it properly you need to learn from your mistake and make sure ALL service is up to date.

dude did i say you're good... pretty much solved my problem. what do you think is the best tranny fluid i can use? also as i drive i regular mode the car kinda hesitates; for example when at a stop light i press the gas and it delays a little? could that be just the dirty fluid? i use unleaded gas. thanks man??

I just reread that first post.... ....As stated your Auto should shift once into 2nd and once into 3rd...3rd is a looooooong gear in an auto....then when you turn on overdrive it will shift into 4th(no power, just saves gas)...the "Hold" button does just that...it "holds" the tranny from shifting into fourth.....it's basically the opposite of having a button to turn on overdrive...the hesitation is probably a seperate issue....whens the last time you did a tune up???

For A/T fluid I recommend Red Line Synthetic D4 ATF.

Check it out at: www.redlineoil.com

I agree with goldstar but I will go a step further and say this:

The TYPE of fluid isn't nearly as important as the CONDITION of the fluid you use.

You don't have a racecar. Synthetics and performance stuff is going to be kinda wasted. You would be doing better to use regular ATF and just keep the filter and fluid changed more regularly. You can never change fluids too often.

Actually I find our transmissions to be one of the best autos around. Almost no hesitation and nice firm shifts that you can feel. The only problem I have is that it wont shift back into first above 10 mph. And we are way to underpowered to use second to accelerate.

I would rather take the car to a shop to get the fluid flushed, then do it myself. Although if I did it myself I would use the synthetic.

changiung fluis is only half of the required service. You have to replace the filter also. If you don't you might as well not bother with the fluid either.
