Question Transmission Curiosity

Hey all--

A point of curiosity on my part: I've heard a nasty rumor that the transmissions in at least the 2001 Protege is made by Ford, and I wondered if anyone else had heard anything about that. Personally, I think that would suck, as I don't place ANY confidense in Ford products. I went with Mazda, first and foremost, because of their reputation for reliability, and if Ford's had any hand in putting components in this vehicle it spells almost certain trouble down the road. That sucks, as does Ford, and would really **** me off ...

No offense to any Ford enthusiasts out there!

Thumbs up

Yes! Thanks, Mike!

That's a relief-- I'm still only approaching 3000 miles on my car, which I picked up in September, so the jury's still out on how well it'll hold up, but in general, especially considering most others commentary, the Protege should prove very well engineered and reliable.

Oh yeah! Gotta love your car, by the way!

Hope all's cool...

well i'm at 24,800kms! not a spec of trouble - nor should there be. But like reefruner5 was saying, he's having some tranny probs on his '01 with under 10,000 (kms or miles?) i think. Hope you get that worked out soon.

p.s. thanks god the tranny is not ford. i work for GM, and IMO all domestics are crap!

I thought I heard somewhere that the Protege's used Jatco transmissions. I think it's short for Japanese Automatic Transmission Company...

re: trannys

ProtegeMasters origional post regarding the quality of a Ford tranny...

I hate to tell you but the trannys that Ford uses in many of it's pickups (the M5 tranny) causes Fords the most headaches and it's designed and built by Mazda.
Also has anyone with reasonable horsepower levels had a problem with the Top Loader, T5 or SROD manuals or the C4, C6 or the 1200 hp capable AOD automatics?
Everyone has to keep in mind the shear quantity of vehicles the big three sell in North America. If you remember the venerable Pinto... exploding when rearended? Ralph Nader (editor of the article to the Pintos demise) picked on the Pinto because of the number of people it could affect. Many other cars had the same problems...even the Japanese like the Chevy Vega, the Toyota Celica, or the CVCC civics!
I love my Protege too and would like to see many miles of thrashing. I chose Mazda because of it's quality record as did/will many.
I AM a ford fan and AM NOT bitching, just spreading my knowledge...hope you enjoyed the read and my opinion.

Rebel Racing. Let me get this right. Your saying that ford uses the P5 tranny in smaller for trucks. If im correct in thinking this yes ford would have a hard time installing it in their trucks. As far as i know all the trucks are rear wheel drive and the P5 is front. Tranny configurations are completly different. If I have misunderstood you Im sorry.

Im also a ford fan. But I had no luck with my AOD In my mustang. Iwas only putting about 250 to the flywheel and it was slipping and what not. IF i wanted a decent AOD i would need to spend aout 1200 on one. But I do agree with you on the C4 and the C6. They are both pretty good trannies. And the T5 I have heard mixed results. One of my friends is running low 11s on his stock tranny and another one of my friends screwed up his tranny and it was a completly stock car. Like I said earlier if i miread your post im sorry. But if your implying that ford is making front wheel drive trucks I dont belive it.

I had a supercharged '92 mustang gt and my t5 transmission never gave me any problems but had transmisson problems w/ my '95 supercab splash which led me to this car. But despite that I'm still a big Ford/Mazda fan. I don't really care you makes the tranny as long as works right. just my 2 cents.

No, he only said that Ford uses a Mazda tranny in some of their trucks. I believe it is the manual in Rangers/B-series trucks, but I may be wrong.

Question Maybe It's Normal (?)

I posted a reply to the tech board indicating my similar experience with transmission "whine", in case anyone's interested. Maybe (hopefully) it's normal for this tranny, as it's done it since I bought the car.

I've noticed the auto tranny in the 1.6 cars make a whine at low speeds. I guess it's a characteristic of the transmission. It's not a bad thing...
