transmission whine

Maybe The Same Deal Here
Alas, I've also noted transmission "whine", but thought that maybe this was simply the way this transmission normally sounds. It's done it since I got the car in September, from day one. The symptoms:
Accelerate to moderate first gear speed then fully depress the clutch with the car still in first gear-- While coasting there's a whining sound. It does NOT do this when you take it out of gear into neutral.
Not being an expert by any means myself, anyone think this is a problem or simply the normal way this tranny should work?
Damn would I be pissed, if, after all the research I did ahead of time to ensure my new car would be reliable, it turns out this car is problematic. Not to whine myself, but I'm already unhappy with the high RPM issue at relatively slow, boring, highway speeds. ~3300 RPM at 70 MPH is ridiculous, in my opinion. I've NEVER seen that before in a car with a 5 speed-- It's like 5th gear serves no "overdrive" purpose whatsoever; What's the point!? They might as well have left it as a 4 speed like my sister's '92 Tercel!
Doh.
