Upgrading the lights up front

I am looking to upgrade the fog lights.
One light is blown, and the other housing is cracked.

Whats out there on the aftermarket that is bright and I can replace the stock ones.

Also what are the options for aftermarket headlights.

Catz SR on Ebay (limited supply)
Cheap ones from JCWhitney.
PIAAs would work, but don't get anything bigger than the stock 5.75" size.

You might consider dumping the fogs altogether--you can get a foglight delete kit (black plastic "vents" that match the grilles, sorta like the 03.5 MSP had) for $40. No real loss since the stock fogs suck.

No options for aftermarket headlights. If you want you can switch to the sedan lights which use H4 bulbs. Or you can get higher output bulbs or an HID retrofit kit. The P5 lights are pretty well optimized so you likely won't do too much better.

Hope this helps.

If you do decide to ever switch out your headlights for sedan ones, you should be able to easily make your money back selling the P5 ones. You may even make a profit since P5 ones normally go for higher.

I guess I will go the HID route, now to find a good kit.
Wonder if I can find some MP3 headlights? Hmmmm

Still not sure what to do about the fogs.

MP3 headlights are the same as the sedan ones, as well as the Mazdaspeed ones.

Every protege had those ones, except the P5, which had the ones you have.

For the fogs, you can just put smoked overlays on them, so the crack isn't as visible. Changing the bulbs is a pain, so use something good, so you dont have a burnout every 3 months.
I recommend Plasmaglow bulbs. 10 year burn out warranty, I've had mine for about 2 years without issues. Look the same as SilverStars.

I had eBay headlights, 3 burnouts in 6 weeks. If that was my fogs.... oh man someone would have been dead.

Fogs on the Pro are such a pain you really only want to do them once.

Buy some good bulbs with a decent warranty, at least a year, don't settle for 30 days, because you dont want to be back under the car every month.

Then buy some overlays to cover the front of the fogs, and you're set.

But where to find overlays at a good price?

JC Whitney

These are the ones I bought. 380K candlepower FTMFW!

They have them in Fog also:

I had to make a bracket to mount them but it was pretty simple.

So far only one person has flashed their lights at me.

I used stainless steel to bend into a 90 degree angle and then drilled 3/8 inch slots to adjust the bolt under the fog and attach it to a bolt in the factory slot. You will need two extra 3/8 inch bolts to attach the bracket to the factory mounting point. One for each side.

The lenses are replaceable also.

or in amber

They are really nice on country roads and look identical to the stockers once installed.

Here is a couple pics of them installed. Pwning 56K!

Cake to install if you have a phillips screwdriver, wire stripper/crimper, and a 12mm(I think) socket.

I also have the MSP headlights.

holy crap .. seriously only $35 dollars, and with replacement lenses available? dayum

I'm no good when it comes to metal fabrication, but I know of a place that could probably handle it for me.

My dad was a machinist for 27 years, stil wasn't rocket science though.

We used some scrap stainless strips that were about 1 1/4 inch wide and about 5 inches long. Bend it to an equal 90 degrees. Drilled two holes on each half of the braket with a 3/8 inch drill bit, filed the center area out so that the bolt can slide and adjust.

The bolt on the back of the factory fog is a 3/8ths and the bolt on the underside of the Eagle Eye is 3/8ths. You end up with an adjustable fog(unlike the stocker), that is bright(also unlike the stocker), with replaceable lenses(you know good and well that the stockers are history of the lense cracks).

To wire it you clip the lead from the factory and attach it to the single wire on the Eage Eye. The ground is attached to the bolt on the bottom of the fog by using an eye connector. There is also an inline fuse to connect to the lead from the battery to the switch under the dash.

The wires have not melted(unlike some Catz).

could you have converted the stock fogs' connector brackets to fit the new lights, and then kept the factory wiring, switch, etc? Of course, this is assuming that there were factory lights there to begin with...

The factory harness and switch remains. I cut the wires at the fog before they go to the harness.

Sorry should have specified.

I might go that route, thats an awesome price and the fact that you can replace the lense is nice.

Now to decide fog or driving.

Thanks!!!

I have the driving lights and holy moly they are bright. They aren't a solid beam straight out though. It is diffused like a headlight.
