Valeine to prevent Rust?

Heard from a friend that if you spread some Vaseline on rusted metal parts, door hinges, weld joints and stuff, it prevents these parts from starting to rust or further rusting by removing the oxygen from the covered area. Would this be true or complete BS? I was thinking of doing this for my hood and areas inside the trunk and engine compartment on the body that are starting to slowly corode.

Careful under the hood...Vaseline's combustible, and water won't put out the flames.

Vaseline liquifies at too low temperature to be useful as rust proofing. Something more waxy might do the job. You would need to remove rust for it to really be effective on bare metal, and if you're going to do that, you may as well paint. If you want to do it in one step, you could try one of those rust stabilizers that turns rust into black iron oxide.

^Much better solution. The vaseline will also attract and hold dirt and road salt (counter to the goal, eh?)

Rustoleum.

Look for a rust proofing spray at any auto store .the only problem wit this stuff is you need to make sure there is no water on the surface you are psaying or you will only create a place for more rust. Rust = metal+oxygen+water, if you eliminate one of these it will prevent more rust from ocurring or at the very least slow whats already there. rust proofing will also collect dirt, salt, etc. so always clean the surface and reapply. I do it evry fall.

Thx for the advice, I usually get the car rust proofed every fall at Krown. They do the whole drill and lube routine and spray (whatever they use ) on all the joints, hinges and so on. Will get a can of rust stabilizer from them to cover the minor rust areas up. Any advice on what to spray on my door hinges, joints and other areas that can be prone to rusting? Is there something in a can I could use that lasts for a few months?
