Lightbulb Weird Front Door Idea!

Hey folks--

One of the things about our Proteges that I've been unhappy with is the lack of a power lock switch on the passenger side.

To that end, I thought of a weird idea the other day that I wonder if anyone knows might work: What if you could locate a Japanese spec Protege (of whatever it's called over there) right side front door? I'm sure the cost of such a venture wouldn't be worth it, but for the hell of it I wondered if anyone thinks you could remove your current passenger's side front door and replace it with a Japanese right side front door. Since in Japan they drive on the left side, the right side front door has all the switches already built in to the door, including a power lock switch.

Seems like it would be easy to simply replace the right side door (provided it's the same size, which I'd bet it is). The hardest part I'd think would be to wire up the door to the same controls that your driver side is connected to.

This is of course totally impractical and surely quite expensive, but I wonder if it would work?

Or maybe you could just order Japanese spec parts and convert your existing right side door so that it has a power lock switch, etc..

Anyway, a nutty idea I was thinking about...

right hand drive

well here in aus we drive on the right... and my controls probably are the same... as long as the ring circuit works with in...

post a pic of you drivers side door and ill compare...

maybe i could order a part from here and fedex it for you..=)

i personally would get pissed off giving the passenger control over whether people can put there windows up or down... but hey...

I have a similar problem, my car has power everything but for some bizarre reason it doesn't have a power lock switch, how hard would it be to wire it? is it just a "plug and play" kind of thing?

If I want to lock my doors I have to press down on the actual door lock and pull it up if I want to open them, I can also use a button on the alarm remote but it's a bitch to get to it since it's behind the steering wheel when the car is running (duh ).

So the electronics store that installed your alarm also installed power lock actuators? I'm assuming that models without power switches also don't have the hardware. I don't think it would be that hard, provided you can decipher their wiring... If you can't, maybe take the car to them and have them show you where to tap in.

The alarm is stock, installed by the dealer I supose. Ill check out my alarm manual, perhaps it has a diagram of the wiring needed to do this.

The VW Golf I had has this on the passenger side. It's quite useful.

I would just route a switch to open the door on the center console. Mercedes cars have just one power door switch and its conviently located in the center console so that both driver and front passenger can access it.
