Weird gas filling problem... help

2002 P5
i do not have one. i looked and felt around inside the filler neck and it doesn't seem like one was ever there. there are no brackets or broken welds anywhere around where the little flap would be.
if i were having filling problems i would take it back to the dealer. the fuel filler system is an emmisions system so it could have something malfunctioning.

Well, I don't want it back THAT bad but it would be nice. I just thought it was good for preventing slosh-over (slosh-out? slosh-down? up?) if a) you over-fill your tank and b) you're so stupid as to forget to screw the cap back on. You cannot have too many devices protecting you from your own stupidity. ....I can't, anyway, but you may not be as stupid as me.
I just looked at the 2002 shop manual.... There's a diagram on page 01-14-03 (and elsewhere) of the fuel tank and associated connections... Lo! Behold the "non-return valve" about three-quarters down the filler pipe. Could that be what we're looking for?

finally got around to checking both of our P-5's....neither have the flap...and I flet inside to see if you could feel anything that would indicate that soemthing came off....the inside is nice and smoothe and nothing to attach the flap to anyway.

Just came from my dealer and checked the flaps in the proteges and the p5s, none have it...
However, I did not check from inside, but I doubt it would have fallen...I strongly think that they come from the manufacturer like that.

WGAF if there is a flap or not. My protege5 didn't have it and I am sure every single Protege5 out there didn't have it either. Its unbelievable how these small things bother some of the owners and that this topic is still active.

Try this.
No flap on mine. Next time you fill up try holding the trigger out to the side to change the flow pattern of the gas. On older Chev trucks you used to have to fill them this way or it would spit all over and take forever. And listen for the gurgle to slow down when the tank is neering full. If doing this you shouldn't have any oversplashing.
