i was going to install the udp today but the weather looks like the sky might fall at any moment. what do you guys use to tighten the belts? do you use the tool to separate the pulleys or do you do it some other way?

the protege doesn't use a tensioner pulley on the accessory drive belts - belt tension is achieved through adjustment bolts on the alternation mount and the AC compressor mount

the timing belt has an "auto" tensioner but not the accessory belts. so i dont know what to use to make them tight. i think they make a tool for it that as you turn something it separates the pulleys but i'm not sure what they are called or where to get one. i'm off again monday so if i can figure this out i'll do it then

do we have a bolt that will tighten the belts as you turn it or do we have to find a way to push the pulleys apart as we tighten them?

Like njaremka said, there are certain accessories that have adjustable positions that act as tensnioners. for example, on my miata, the alternator is the tensioner for the alternator / water pump belt, and the PS tightens the PS / AC belt.

You need to get the belt to about 1/8" deflection up/down. It will be really obvious once you tear into it.

EDIT to your edit: Yes, there's a bolt. It's painfully simple.

i saw the adjustable part for the alt belt (i think it was that one). so just pull up on that and tighten the belt correct? that's what i gathered from looking at it

what's your obsession with pulling!? Stop saying pulling or you're getting smacked by the pimp had. I've got to keep it strong.

No, there's no pulling. You loosen or tighten a bolt. Loosening it (I THINK) will loosen the tension on the belt. Tighten it, and you get more tension on the belt.

when i looked at it it looked like it had a sway arm that when the bolt was loosened it would lay down so the belt was loose, and in order to tighten it you had to hold the arm erect and tighten the bolt to keep it in place.... but maybe not. i'll look at it when i get down there. just didnt wana get stuck and not know where to go.

EDIT: i didnt say pull or pulling (other than now )

It's seriously one of those 'assembly is reverse of disassembly' deals. If you can't figure it out, please put the wrench down...............
