Stock Pulley Weight: 5 lbs 0.6 oz
RR-Racing UDP Weight: 1 lb 6.4 oz

There are the weight specs for the two pulleys. RR-Racing's pulley weighs over 3 pounds LESS than the stock pulley, not to mention the smaller diameter of the pulley itself

Nice! After you've had some time to assess it's performance and value, why don't you post a review in the 3rd gen engine section, along with these photos?

That way it's easier for members to access the photos rather than digging though this long thread to find them in the future.

ggrr.... it squeels. gotta tighten the belts but the car is hot so i'll have to do it later. it's only right after i start the car though. it's weird. it doesnt do it at idle, but once i start the car and start moving it squeels until i am in about 3rd gear, and then i dont hear it again until i turn off and restart the car. i guess i'll tighten the belts and see what happens.

NICE work on the pics. I know its so hard to pull myself away from wrenching to get out the stupid camera. But how about the real question: how does she drive w/ the UDP??

it's not a major difference but just noticeable. i notice the most difference "in between gears." like, going 30 it's a little too fast to downshift to second (while daily driving) but a little low to start accelerating in third. it accelerates faster in these such areas, if you can get what i am saying.

only thing that has me now is why the squeeling for the first couple gears after i start the car, and then it goes away. its puzzling but i'll tighten the belts (i think it's the alt/wtr pump that's loose so i'll see what happens once the car cools off

EDIT: i tightened them and it stopped for a lil while but it started again when i left my g/fs house, on a cold start. how tight is too tight on the belts? someone told me 1/2 in deflection and that is about what they are at.... they are new belts but should they need tightening this often?

Put my customized MSP shift lever back in. This time the shop guys seem to have done a better job on it. I had smooth shifting on the way to work!

It should be more like 1/8 inch deflection. It should be tight enough that it only moves a little bit, but it definitely moves and isn't rock-solid.

I always checked using 'twist' deflection.. if on a long span you can twist the belt 90 degrees or more (by hand), it's too loose.

I should get the thread renamed 'what did you do to your protege5 yesterday'.

last night I installed both pairs of AWR side motor mount inserts (thanks www.speedcircuit.net and www.awrracing.com). The only time I had my tranny side stuff apart was to drop the tranny, but I left the bracket on the tranny this time and pulled the one off the chassis. so easy to install! It's the only motor mount I hadn't upgraded and wow what a friggin difference. The car is much louder now because of that rigid transmission connection. so good!! As for vibrations.. yeah not really any more than before (both side motor mounts stock because the SLS passenger side one broke).

Hopefully this evening I'll have time to install the front mount (was so easy before, but with turbo + piping down there now it's a bit of a hassle) and then I can do the rear sometime the week after next.

no more flimsy mounts for me! The metal used on the AWR mounts is not only thicker than the bracket that broke on my SLS, but it's STEEL not brittle aluminum.

p.s. anyone wanna buy a perfectly good SLS front motor mount? It's the only mount of theirs that I do still trust, because lets face it the front mount doesn't do a whole lot.. there's no load on it when the car is just sitting there..

yeah, i had to take mine out because of that - the noise in the cabin was giving me a headache, and as soon as i took it out, all better. i did like the lack of engine movement, though. at the time, i had the front RR insert, and the two AWR side inserts, with stock rear mount.

that's sorta similar to my current setup.. stock rear, sls front (75 duro so basically like stock mount + insert) and AWR side inserts.

I've only done 30 minutes of driving on it so far and I didn't get a headache. before I honestly couldn't hear my engine over the turbo noises (I don't know if it's my intake, the downpipe, or what but I haven't been in a car that has as loud of a spooling noise.. then again I've never been in another turbo car that didn't come that way from the factory..). The real test will be tonight / tomorrow morning when I make the trek from Rochester to CT and then from CT to New Hampshire

becuase of the location of the tranny mount, all the vibrations and noises from the tranny transfer right into the frame rails when the AWR mount insert is used. i just couldn't take it.

now i have street unit front mount installed, and thier rear mount waiting. after that, i might try thier passanger side mount. i really don't want to put another drivers side mount in. i think at the most, i might try filling a stock mount.

the driver's side mount singlehandedly is the biggest change I've ever felt.

I think mine was bad though it didn't look it at all? just worn out I guess at 87k miles. the drivetrain slop that I had even back in the day (5k miles ago) when I had AWR front and rr racing rear inserts is totally gone.

I think I can tolerate it though. I missed hearing my engine, it's nice to have it back. It isn't really even a noise so much as you're just really feeling the transmission, which I thoroughly enjoy. the noise level of the straight-cut reverse gears is so entertaining now!

I hadn't heard about the noise transmission with the driver's side insert--I've got one sitting at home but maybe I'll hold off on it.

With the MSP side and SLS front there's still some slop (rear mount's undamaged) so I'm still looking for a better setup. Probably get the SU rear a bit later.

Nik, how's that SU front treating you?

i like it, compared to stock and the RR front insert - by itself, it really controls the engine movement, but not as much as i would like. i'm hoping the rear mount will go in easier than i had heard, and settle the engine down that much more. right now, when my clutch decides it wants to shudder, the front of car feels like it wants to shake itself loose.
