What Was Your First Mod?

Compared to a bad RWD, like a Mustang, it has a lot less, but with the Mustang, you can get power oversteer.
Most Proteges have a little drop-throttle oversteer. So, the secret is, when the car starts understeering, get off the gas (or tap the brakes for you LFBs) and unwind the wheel.
LFB = Left Foot Braker
Oh, I forgot. My first actual mod was to put on rear mud flaps.

Actually, I wasn't really comparing it to anything. My other car is a Prelude Type SH. As you know, the SH was the best handling car under $30,000 - so I don't expect to compare the Protege5 to the Prelude's handling. Although I am curious why you would compare a FF and a FR in handling Also, when you said "Most Proteges have a little drop-throttle oversteer" -- what does that mean? Can't you get off gas to stop over and/or understeer anyways?

My first mods was some stuff I had from my other cars. Soon as I got the car home. Weapon R foam filter, volt guage, fire extinguisher ( had a friend who lost a hooked up gti do too burning down because of a electrical short and all he could do was watch. Well I learned from his mistake always have one in every car I own just incase). Red Mazda shoulder pads, Phantom a/f meter. All this was from old cars. Then.........
Ractive intake converted into col air intake
Dragon foam filter
Intake and exhaust cams
Mobile 1 synthetic oil
Mp3 wheels
Pioneer deh7400 mp3 player ( with 12 disc from old car)
Ractive strut bar
Water temp guage
mp3 ecu
Protege el side sills
gutted pre cat
msd 8.5mm wires(from old project car)
So far all this cost me no more then $1600 dollars. I do all my own installs though.
In the trunk is a magnaflow muffler waited to have a custom 2 1/4 in catback exhaust done soon as I get a job.

The Prelude is available in two models - the Prelude and Prelude Type SH. Also an industry favorite, the Prelude earned a spot on Car and Driver's "Ten Best" vehicle listing and was named the world's best handling car for under $30,000 last year. In addition, the Prelude was named "Most Appealing Sporty Car" in a 1997 J.D. Power and Associates survey.
Bottom Line: For a practical sports car under $30,000 both the "experts" and I agree, there is no question that the Prelude SH is the best choice. For the best handling front wheel drive car ever manufactured at any price, this car is still the best choice.
Best handling car I have ever driven. There is a reason Car & Driver rated this the best handling car under $30,000, and 4th best handling car at ANY price. This car takes 25mph turns at 90 as though it were on railroad tracks and needs to go faster. This is amazing for any auto, but on a front wheel drive vehicle, it is astounding. The engine is impressive, although there are certainly more powerful engines available for straight-away power. However, it is one of the most entertaining engines I have driven. A Porsche Boxster engine has nothing on the torque curve of this car. Fun to drive factor, this car gets a ten. When considering this for purchase I considered an Intregra Type R, BMW Z3, Honda S2000, Toyota Celica, Porsche Boxster, a used Acura NSX, and a used 911 Targa. The Prelude won easily due to it's superiority in handling and cost. Admitedly, the S2000 might have won, were it not for the fact that I could not buy one for under $40,000.

Perhaps we’re easily confused, but we’ve always thought of the Honda Prelude as a hot-performing, high-tech sporty car. It featured among the first appearances of anti-lock brakes, variable valve timing, four-wheel double-wishbone suspension, four-wheel steering, and fiber-reinforced cylinder blocks. With its sophisticated 16-valve DOHC VTEC engine pumping out an impressive 190 horsepower from just 2.2 naturally aspirated liters, it dashed 0-60 mph in a stout 6.7 seconds and topped out at an awesome 140 mph. Its well-tuned suspension created confidence-inspiring, easy-to-exploit extreme handling and lofty test-track highs of 0.89 g on the skidpad and 66.6 mph in the slalom
With an 80-millisecond response time, the computer tells a linear solenoid to progressively direct hydraulic pressure from the ATTS’ dedicated pump to incrementally engage the appropriate clutch (similar to those found in automatic transmissions). The planetary gearset then steals torque intended for the left (or inside) tire and diverts it back through the differential, where it’s used to speed up the right tire. In extreme cornering, the ATTS shifts up to 80 percent of engine torque to the outside tire, which is spun up to 15 percent faster than the inside. The process works much like a kayaker paddles hard forward on the right side to make the canoe turn left.

I was talking only about handling, and these are the specs for the mazdaspeed protege, while the SH may have been the best at its time, which I kinda doubt, the MS pro will outhandle it and costs around 20...One problem with these specs though is typically they're not quoted with skidpad size and slalom course length, so its hard to be sure they're exactly the same. Don't get me wrong, the SH is a very nice car, but I don't think its the best handling thing ever, and here on a protege board we have alot of lean to our "family" as it were.

I don't know where you saw the "2900 lbs," but the Prelude SH is actually a little over 3000 lbs, and it was still pronounced best handling car under $30,000 by Car and Driver. Now, are you going to tell me that Car and Driver is a bunch of newbies who would bs about cars? I highly doubt that..
