whats the teeth like rubber thing on the roof rack?

I saw the new P5s had this plastic rubber thing (about 1 ft long) mounted on the front edge of the front roof rack.... its only mounted on the center section

does anyone have this or is it for the new cars only? and is it supposed to serve any purpose? the guy at the dealer counldn't tell me but he said I could probably get one from parts for free....

I noticed that too. It is different from the earlier cars. I wonder if it's an attempt to to kill the whistle/wind noise the rack makes at speed?

Can anyone post a pic? Is there anyway to add such a thing to older P5s?

what's this i hear?

if this roof thing really stops that whistle i want to know about it. i have an 02 p5 and the thing whistles like crazy when i'm on the freeway. maybe it's because i never go slower than 80? it stops the whistle (potentially) and we can get it for free? tell me how!

i will have to agree. i talked to the dealer who also had a P5 and she said her's whistled so bad she had to get the moonroof deflector and it still whistles. My 2002.5 has the rubber thing in the middle (her's didn't) and mine's doesn't whistle at all, even going 85 on the way from California to Arizona. I'm not sure if it's because i didn't get the moonroof or not, but the rack makes no noticeable noise. Either that or I got used to it!

Mine doesnt whistle until I get to around 90 MPH or above. Then I get the screaming ghost.

i have to admit that the screaming ghost whistle is very irritating. i guess i have to get a head unit upgrade! then i can just drown it out! as it is i can hear it all the time when i'm on the freeway.

maybe i can go buy an extra windshield wiper and glue it up there. is that what the thing looks like?

I think maybe people who get whistles sounds that are more noticable are people with moonroofs..... and maybe that new rubber thing helps eliminate the sound too.

cause I remember when I test drove the cars one with moonroof and one without, the one with moonroof had a more noticeable sound.

Check the TSB for the whistling. alldata.com or the government website has the technical service bulletin for this problem.....so does the dealer. It's a free fix...just schedule an appointment.
