Did anyone notice this thread is almost entirely Canadians? That always gives me a good chuckleloo. And KrisA has an excellent point, way easier to e-brake with quality tires (and I love to do that).

Off-topic kinda, read till end....

No offense to you Yanks that know something about our country, BUT....

I was in Cali w/ my family a couple years back (Dizneeland) and we were staying at this hotel close by. We were at the outdoor pool that night and everyone (tourists) were talking with each other. One way or another some of them found out we were Canadians (eh) and starting grilling us with the most inane questions possible, the ones usually reserved for tv. What happens to your igloos in summer? I have a friend in toronto, do you know him? (real questions) etc. Reminds me of that "this hour has 22 minutes" 'talking to americans' special. Anyways, the very worst thing that pissed me off was this one clown from washington (state) that was all bragging up about how he had went "North" one time and it had got down to -20°C and had barely survived this weather. All the people sitting around the pool were ooohing and ahhhing about how cold that was. WTF?! minus twenty, my family and I almost **** ourselves laughing. My brother then broke it too them that we routinely experience -35 weather and it can get worse. The worst I personally have experienced was -43 + wind chill ( -67°C total ). Now that was effing cold. When we told them that they couldn't comprehend it. I think they thought oxygen froze out of the air at that temp. Christ.... And to wrap it up, my parents had snow tires on the minivan we used for that trip. They worked good sans abs.

as for the guy saying winter tires arent worth it? ugh...well, according to your "location" thingie, you're from NJ, i'm not saying you dont get snow...but i'm sure it doesnt compare. now if you hailed from buffalo, then maybe your opinion would matter (to me at least)

P.S. i'm from canada. woohoo!
Please Mike, People not allowed to have options?
Let me let you know something, NY NJ , were I am from, does not get the snow like Can. But Like I said if you could read.
I did not state it was not a bad Idea.
Now lets keep to the topic.
All seasonals will work Peroid.
If your driving skills suck Mike, and you need help then thats your problem.
Get over it all ready.

So we all agree that winter tires work best in snow.

And its not really an investment buying winter tires because instead of using up your summer tires, you use up winter tires in the winter. So you buy all seasons twice as much as if you were to have dedicated summer and winter tires. It just makes sense in my mind.

Why bother with bieng the "best" winter driver when you can concentrate on where you are going instead.

talking to whom?

actually pro_fan i wasn't talking to you, i was refering to distance and his colourfull posts.

banff eh! that's cool, beautiful place. lots of snow up there....at least on the ski hills i've been too

people, read the initial question. OF COURSE snow tires are better than all seasons in the snow, this isn't what the question was.

distance: if i'm not mistaken ( and i could very well be) the section of the 401 east of windsor is credited with being the worst section of highway in ontario.....if not all of canada. but hey! you know what your talking about.

yeh that stretch of the 401 isn't terribly friendly when the fog cooks up.

you can bet i'll be throwing snows on the pro for the winter. like some have said, it's not bad in the city(if you're fortunate enough to have a job that's concurrent with the plow schedules, some of us are commuting when the roads are quiet and the sprinklers are chattering) but i'd rather be on skinnies heading up to work(or blue!).

it's funny listening to all the winter-elite drivers sitting in tim's talking about how no one in the city knows how to drive and watching them doing a pirouette after pulling out of the parking lot. i'll never have enough common sense to make up for everyone elses' lack thereof! i wouldn't think twice about opting for 24mo financing if i had a dime for everytime i've been stopped at an intersection and watched some joker in my rear view mirror dip the nose of their cherokee/land rover/MDX/X5/(insert choice suv here) and fishtail towards my rear bumper (that's never done anything to anyone to deserve getting smashed into). thank god for empty turn lanes!

i've heard that too...i think it was last year there was a HUUUUGE pile-up on that secion of highway...its mostly cuz of the fog. it comes off the niagara escarpment and sits in that valley. (or so i hear)
I got stuck in that particular accident, I managed to avoid getting hit or hitting someone, but I was their for hours.

Stocker.
