Breaking Brakes

Ah damn... The protege was making clickin noises recently, only for a few days. Not really sure how to describe it, I thought it needed an alignment. Here, one of the back brake assemblys (drums) shattered and broke a drum. Wadda bummer... So now they're installing 2 new assemblies and drums, which means I need to repaint them...O well. Has this happened to anyone else?

It happened on my 2nd gen. A return spring prematurely broke causing the wheel cylinder the put constant pressure on the shoe, eventually heating it up so much the assembly gave out. Unfortunately its hard to do a visual inspection without completely disassembling the drum so I didn't think anything was wrong except for an adjustment until the tire locked in my driveway.

That, and those damn phillips screws for the drums are impossible to get off without air tools
