Question Changing from 2 to 4 wheel disk

I have a 2001 Mazda protege 2.0 LX. This came stock with only 2 wheel disk brakes and I was wondering how much it would be to change to 4 wheel disk brakes? I know that it can be done and that it isn't that much. But the reason I want to make sure is because I want to install a big brake converion kit. For those of you who have the ES/MP3/P5 model you can get the big brake kit from mazdaformance.com. Thanx.

Actually the rear disc conversion isn't very cheap. I think I heard $350 each for the rear calipers. So I'd figure about $900-1000 worth of parts unless you can get some used caplipers.

There is a thread if you do a search that discusses which parts you need.

I was also looking into doing that, however the only way you can do that is by buying the stock rear disk parts for a P5/MP3/ES models, as there is not a 4 lug disk conversion available for the 3rd Gen. So that means that you will also have to convert the front disk to the 5 lug pattern which = MONEY.
Anyway, our front disk and rear drums are adequate stopping power for our cars, it's not like we are going 80MPH and doing hard braking very often anyway.

there is not a 4 lug disk conversion available for the 3rd Gen.
That is not true at all. There is a 4 lug disc available from the Japanese Sport 20. It's available from www.mazdamotorsports.com for $32.

The $32 conversion you mention is only for the brake rotors, and you will need 2. In oder to complete the conversion, you will need to obtain a pair of 4-lug hubs (the drum and disk hubs are the same) and press them into the suspension uprights from a disk car.

Roger Foo's P5 is running a 4-bolt conversion with big brakes ... maybe you could get in touch with Jim Jordan or AWR about how much it would cost.. heh. Got deep pockets?

I know it will be expensive. IMHO the only way to do this swap economically is to use junkyard parts. The cost of buying all-new uprights, calipers brackets, e-brake cables and calipers will be outrageous because our cars are so new. Fortunately, because the cars are new, the junkyard cars are less likely to have FUBAR'ed brake hydraulics from driving around for 8+ years with the factory brake fluid, so re-using junkyard calipers is safe.

Point is: To build a 4-lug disk Protege, you will need a pair of JDM Sport 20 rotors from Mazdaspeed and an extra pair of stock 4-lug hubs; everything else comes from a junked 01+ ES, MP3 or P5.
