Emergency break light comes on

My emergency break light comes on when i break hard, then the light goes off. Car breaks fine (or so it did this morning), don't want to take it to dealership just yet because they will just ask for $$$$$$$, just want to figure out whats wrong before i take it there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

welcome to the forum,.....a fwew quick comments.

#1. make sure to post questions in the correct sections. This should be under "brakes/suspension/wheels"...I'll move it for you.

#2. If you don't have a real good understanding of how the car works it would help you out greatly to buy a ech manual. One can be found here protege5.ugly.net

#3. your brake fluid is low. That's why it's going off under hard braking. Make sure to fill it up to the top line and no more.

Making sure to check your fluids properly and keep on all maintaince is the best thing you can ever do. Saves a lot of money and headaches.

if your brake fluid is low, it might be because your pads are running thin. check the pads to see if they're in need of replacement yet. just because they're not down to the indicators doesn't mean they need replacing.

i'd check your rotors they might be below tolerance, mine were, and i was suprised how thick they still were. but at least it gave me an excuse to pick up these hot slotted/drilled rotors from ractive!

they're just covers, dirt cheap at canadian tire, i think they try to sell them in the ricer dept. for three times as much in a "engine dress up kit", but i'm sure you can find them in electrical somewhere, just thin plastic covers, spliced down the center, but looks great IMO.
