03 Protege Stereo

Ok, I've hit up search a few times and couldtn come up with much. I need to replace the stereo in an 03 Protege. The wire harness was a fairly easy find, but for the mounting braket, i'm having trouble. Best Buy says that the car doesnt need one... but by looking at the size of the stock and aftermarket headunit's.... i'd say it's probably going to need one. Another place in town tried to just sell me the little pocket for under the stereo.

Any ideas on where i can get a stereo?

any double din stereo will fit right in.

if you choose a single din or 1.5 din you'll need an adapter.

Best buy, circuit city...any place like that will have it.

Ehh.... sorry, she has the stereo. Best buy looked it up on their computer and it said that it doesnt take any adapter bracket. It would help if someone had a part number for Scoche or something. Maybe i'll have to get a number and call and order the damn thing then.

I have an 03 es and put in a stero and did not use any brackets just the pocket and the mounting unit from the aftermarket headunit and have had no problems. It fits very snug and tight. I was very skepital at first seeing the difference in size but it does fit perfect. Good luck

I bought the single din metra pocket for my P5. The Best Buy and Circuit City here did not have this part in stock and I didn't feel like waiting three days, so I got it from a car audio specialty shop. I, too, was skeptical about using just the metal jacket that comes with the aftermarket HU, but like Molloy said, it actually works well and fits snug. The lines and gaps all match up and the install looks very clean. The biggest pain of the install for me was actually just taking out the OEM HU. If you haven't gotten it out already, do yourself a favor and whether you make the tool from metal hangers or buy them from walmart ($3.50 a set, I reccommend it as hangers didn't work for me) tape up the trim around the stereo to avoid scratching it up. Good luck!
