Question 2003 MP5 Stock 6 disc HU Question

I think most of us agree that the stereo just about sucks...
Question...
Is it the speakers? (Very possible since they're POS)
Or the unit?

Has anyone replaced the speakers and kept the unit? Amped the unit?

I guess I'm asking HAS ANYONE MADE THE STOCK HU SOUND GOOD?

i've replaced the back speakers and it sounds much better, i was gonna add an amp but i kind of like the sound now, i have some really good 2 ways in the back so i get good bass and highs and the stock crappy speakers in the front give me some good mids

New speakers make a huge difference. I've replaced the stock ones with Infinity Reference speakers and it's 10x better, so much clearer. You'll laugh when you see the stock speakers, the tweeter looks like a peanut-butter cup wrapper. Now I'm just waiting for the weather to chanage so I can install the amp.

Go for new speakers. It's cheap and very easy to install (except for removing those dang door handles...)

I noticed! I had my door apart this weekend installing some LEDs. These things are NOT mod friendly that's for sure. SO it's not the unit just the POS speakers! KICK ***! That is easily fixed! THANKS guys!

This is definitely a topic to search on - lots of people have done different things for different reasons, and have been happy. The stock HU is a good signal source, but it is power limited. It is good to hear from some of the people who have done only speaker upgrades and have been happy with the results!

I also kept the stock HU, but I have added an amplifier for the stock speakers in the doors, and a small powered sub, and have been very happy with the results. The stock HU has it's benefits, and it doesn't have steal me written all over it.

Good Luck!!

Dale.

The speakers are POS. I had my stock HU and it put out some sweet tunes when I got new speakers. But I couldn't resist and got myself a new HU

I'm not looking for trunk rattling... just better. There's no bass what so ever! SO It sounds like I'll be content with just some new speakers! Thanks all!

Don't listen to anyone in Alberta. They have tainted beef. Try replacing the speakers first. It is the cheapest mod to fix your stereo, not to mention if you bought a new HU you won't be able to get full benefit from it anyways. Good luck DaleK has a great system without replacing the HU. He has proved that good sound doesn't need to cost a fortune. I have heard it fist hand. Good luck.

Its the thin speaker wires connected to the rear speakers, and the HU is a bit underpowered too. But for me, the stock unit and speakers suffices. I listen to music somewhere else. In the car, I listen to ...the car. And cranking the stereo too loud is dangerous in a car anyways.
