F1 cars create more than double their weight in downforce on some applications and stability by use of spoilers.
Hey slowdown people, no need to flame. To begin with, this spoiler looks awesome on some cars, and thats what I think nicks is behind, for the looks. Who cares about down force on street?
Anyway...not every spoiler is made to create downforce, but prevent wind to create turbulence thus creating a low pressure mass behind the car that will continuosly pull the not-aerodynamics-wise car. But, that will depend on the design.
The spoiler looks nice. So go for it if you like it....but, dont leave the car stock with only that spoiler.

I have a P-5, and I have had my car over 110mph on the highway. I have never noticed a side to side motion on my car. It does not matter that you have lowered your car cause that spoiler is not going to help you any. If you have to justify buying this spoiler to us then its not worth it, but if its something you want just because then get it. I think it makes MOST (not all) cars look retarded. Your car would look better if you were to get a spoiler that looked more like a factory installed wing. Just my .02

Exactly, they look like **** most of the time. Some people are arguing that these will help stabililty on a protege at higher speed, and I argue that it won't. There are too many aerodynamic factors (roofline of the car, width of body, etc etc...) to say that any aftermarket wing will add stability or downforce. I have seen some articles on certain applications will actually add "lift"!!!. Think about some convertibles with that terrible backlash (330ci's come to mind). They need a rear windshield type thing for convertible driving because of the wind backlash cause by that swirl of air that rushes over the front windshield and then gets pulled backwards and causes that wind coming from behind feel. On some cars with aftermarket wings the same concept will lift on the spoiler, creating less downforce as before... In effort to stay unbiased however I need to point out a theory on your P5. If the ES suffers from poor rear stability at high speed and the P5 doesn't, it could simply be the extra weight of the hatch over the rear wheels. I think a ES will be fine too, but I have never driven one at these speeds.

My wife has a 02 honda civic ex. I have had it up to 100 mph on the hwy. I never had any side to side motion. The only thing I noticed was the front end seemed kinda light. Nothing in the rear end of the car. I just think this guy is tring to justify to us why he needs a spoiler. I think if you want one, get one and not worry what everyone else thinks.

The new 2003.5 Mazdaspeed spoiler looks a lot better (just a personal recommendation).

It looks different than the MP3 one. Check that out, that one is sort of a mid spoiler and looks very very good on our proteges (later models). The curves echoes with the shape of the our proteges.

I agree, I think the spoilers that come on the cars stock look good. I don't like to look of the after market rice wings. They have no function what so ever, but like I said before if its something you want then get it.

No you're right. One is made by Honda and one By Mazda. They are almost the same size. It does not matter how you look at it. The spoiler does nothing for our cars Doing 55 or doing 120 mph. We can't get enough speed out of these little cars to need one. Look at something like NASCAR or Indy Cars, they go ***** to the wall fast. They have adjustable spoilers. What makes you think the spoilers you can order out any mag or off the internet are that good. They are just generic fiberglass wing that probably could not even handle the stress of high speeds. So
