CD-Player skipping...any fix?
as many know, i just installed an alpine 7984 head unit about a week or two ago, i'm having 2 problems, front speakers cut out every time i turn the speakers up over 15 or 17 (some wiring problem i have to fix). but my other problem that i'm baffled about is it's gradually getting worse, but when i have the sub gains all the way up and there is ALOT of bass in the song, if i have the subs hitting hard enough, the cd skips... and this i just can't tolerate. is it the head unit? or is there someway that i can 'shock absorb' the head unit? i was all siked about having such a good head unit and then this **** happens to me, i can't stand it, should i return it while i have a chance or what? any input is appreciated, thanks.

edit: didn't think much about it until now, but bumpy roads are a good culprit too, is there anyway that i installed the head unit wrong? it looks astetically alright and i have no problems with the look, but could the extra wiring hanging out the back be a culprit?

Did you mean 7894?
I have found that the alpines are very prone to that if the rear is not supported.
Use the rubber stopper that comes with it and get it to gram to the factory radio support bracket in the dash.
The only CDs I have seen problems with for alpines are CD-Rs. Most printed disc seem to have less problems.
Also I assumed you ran the power wire with a good sized guage and attached it directly to the battery or the main power at the column, correct?

ok, i'll have to look into that rubber stop, i remember seeing the thing, and i realize now that the back of the head unit isn't supported, its only held in by the kit in the front, i don't install head units, this is my second one, and i never had a problem with the first one, so thats why i asked. and by the way, the skipping doesn't happen on a brand new cd, just my old ones and my cd-r's, so who knows, i'll keep ya posted, thanks

shouldn't be drawing too much power from the head unit... or could be, i don't know, even with accessories off, it's kinda bad. you also have to realize, that the current draw from those internal v-drive amps (60x4 peak) requires a 10 or 12 guage amp kit with a 20 amp fuse. it's needed basically, from what i've been told, that the head unit will draw enough power if you run it hard and long enough that you could eventually fry the head unit or the wiring harness. thats what i was told prior to buying it. i'm not sure about the actual pressure levels put out by my subs, but i don't keep it at earth rattling levels, thats why i've been worried. and i'm only running a 200 watt amp, and at peak, could only pull 25 amps until the damn inline fuse blew, and it's still intact and working, so unless there is something i haven't been told, the power draw shouldn't be a factor. i've gotta sure up my install a little bit today with better power and ground wires for my head unit and amp, plus i'm getting some new connectors as well as new wiring harness to eliminate some engine noise. i'll let you guys know how it goes, apparently there is a rubber stop to support the back of the head unit? lol, so it could just be i don't have the damn thing mounted right and the vibrations are causing the skipping and the head unit is fine. who knows, i'll keep you posted.

ok, the skipping has been eliminated. i upgraded my wiring all around, upping everything to stinger cables (no stinger terminals) running power wire to my amp, i ran a power wire to my head unit and spiced the wire directly in to the yellow power wire of my stereo harness with a vampire tap, ran 2 new sets of stinger rca's for my subs and for future use to amp my fronts eventually. like an idiot, i finally realized a bendable piece of metal with a rubber stop on the tip of it is used to brace the back end of your head unit, pulling this forward and jamming the head unit and kit back into place, the back of the head unit is now supported like it was supposed to be. this problem was all a result of an improper install. thanks for your input guys.
