crank or no crank?
hey all
first off i'd like to say that this site has some damn good info.
anyways i have a 90 protege SE (DX), and i just installed some 5.25" mb quarts in the front. i removed the stock grills and top mounted the speakers with the added mounting ring because the doors are so shallow.
all was fine and it looked pretty nice, UNTIL i decided to put the window cranks back on and discovered that if i or the passenger try to crank the windows up or down, they'd hit the damn mounting rings!@!@
has this happened to anyone before? anyone have ideas with what i can do?
i guess i can go with OEM or aftermarket power windows, but crap i totally didnt see this problem coming.
the summer is coming and my frickin blower switch it out too!!

I never had the problem with the mounting rings, but the ppl who installed the peakers in my doors before I got the car did the same, too deep of speakers.. scratched my tint all up..
Can you manage to cut a little bit of the mounting rings off to clear the crank? Than do a little "custom" molding work to make it look decent? All that makes not much sense, but I guess i better think about it before I type it...lol If money is an issue, i could imagine how much Power windows would cost ya..

Just for clarification, is your problem that you cant roll the windows down at all because the crank hits the grill, or that they dont go down all the way because the window hits them cause they're too deep?
Mine dont go down all the way, so i was planning on making custom mounts to give em more clearance, but if you hit the crank, it might be a problem for me too. hhmmm

that's exactly what is happening...since the doors are shallow, i used the mounting rings so that the window would not hit the magnets. the mounting ring and grillfill the gap between the door panel and the lip of the side pocket...
sooo i cant make a full rotation of the crank without hitting the grill.... im still stumped.

since I don't know what the cranks look like...i have electric windows.....is it possible to make yourself some custom window cranks? that are just enough shorter that they will clear the grills?

Most window crank assemblies are similar - meaning that the post of the crank mechanism that the crank handle attaches to is probably the same size as a ton of other cranks.
Auto Parts stores usually carry tons of aftermarket and OEM repro window cranks, and they don't cost much at all. Many them will stick out further than your stock one - so that the **** of the crank is further from the door panel.
Forward soldier! To the auto parts store!
Pull one of your cranks off, and see if you can find one that looks like the mounting is the same. Worth a shot, and you shouldn't have to spend more than $20.

yeah i thought of shortening the arm of the crank....
filing the height of the mounting ring might be feasible...
going to an auto parts store and looking for a longer shank to stick the spindle in...that never occured to me...THANKS
i was thinking bout this too altho it'd be kinda ...a ratcheting arm! so instead of rotating it 360 degrees i ratchet it!!!
