cranking out some tunes...(part II)

Ok, I'm ordering the following stuff today.. but first a couple questions.

On the website for e-design, they have the box design for the 12O. It has a sealed box that is pretty simple.. does anybody think I will be better off with a different design? ported perhaps? I would assume they know what they're doing..but just wodering if there are any other ideas.

Also, I know blue got frustrated when he tried to answer this and the board didn't cooperate.. but for the sake of my sanity.. could anybody give me a list of what wiring I'm gonna need??

Anyway, here's what I'm doin.. this is based off of blue's ideas along with rear speakers recommended by several.

HU: Alpine CDA-9807
Front spkrs: CDT classic CL-61a
Rear Spkrs: Infinity Reference 652i
Sub: e-design 12 O
Amp: 4 channel, AXA 440.4
Sub Amp: AXA 500m

All I need now is the wiring and to build a box.

I can't thank those who helped me out enough, so.. thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou THANK YOU! You've saved me a lot of headaches.. I appreciate it more than you could imagine.. it's nice to see a board who really likes to help people not just flame them for being ignorant.

be really carefull. go read the last 2 pages of my thread and then order from EDesigns.

the 500M is on backorder and it won't be available till early August!!! I was told that mine has shipped. I had to wait 6 days for a tracking number for my sub! 3 days later they told me that the amp HASN'T been shipped after all... IT WAS ON BACKORDER!

I paid $70 for Priority shipping and the stuff that should have been here last Friday is coming here TODAY! (only the sub)

IN ANY CASE - send them an email before you decide to order - just to see if the stuff is REALLY "in stock". they're good people, but they messed up like hell with my order...

now for the wiring...

you definitely have to start with the power.
since you're running two amps, you probably need to buy a distribution block or something like that. I'll leave it for the experts... but... the first thing you have to buy is the wire that will go from the battery to the distribution block - about 20 feet of 4 gauge. I don't know if you're supposed to use the same wire from the dist. block to each amp. if that's the case, then you have to buy a couple more feet of the same wire.

then you need GROUND WIRE. same as the one above, only shorter. You need to run it from each amp to the chassis... the one I ordered is 5 feet. I probably don't need 5 feet, but I decided to get more... You might want to get 8 feet - cut it in two and ground each amp.

next, you need a battery terminal and an inline fuse holder.
both are available from knukonceptz.com

you also need a fuse for that fuse holder. mine is an 80AMP fuse - this is the recommended fuse for a single avionixx 500M. I don;t know what the proper way of "fusing" your system is, since you're using two amps. experts will tell you more...

next, you need speaker wire. I got 9 feet of their (knukonceptz) Karma Kable - twisted speaker cable. You need to run a wire from your subwoofer to the speaker terminal on the back of your box. Whatever is left of that cable you will use to connect the speaker terminal to the amp. THIS IS FOR THE SUB ONLY. someone else will tell you what you need for the speakers.

this is what you have so far:

X feet of Karma Kable 10 Gauge Twisted Speaker Kable (for the sub)
XX feet of Kolossus Kable 4 AWG Red/Silver 2058 strands (battery to distributr block and from then to the amps) - power for the amps
XX feet of Kolossus Kable 4 AWG Black/Silver 2058 strands (each amp to ground)
X In-Line Waterproof fuseholder for 4 or 8 gauge. Silver plated.
1 battery terminal
1 distribution block (if required)

all this stuff is available at knukonceptz.com

You make your calculations and decided how long you want your cables to be. This is the general idea though. I hope I helped a bit.

thanks for the start on wiring.. anybody else wanna finish/modify the list?? many thanks to all who have helped me out.

Also.. the more I hear about wiring and such the more confused I get.. I'm a fairly smart person, but I know jack about wiring.. is this something I can do myself? (I have a friend that's pretty good..he may be able to help me out a bit) Or would it be better to just have it installed.. if so, how much do you think it would cost me? I hate to pay for an install that I think I can do myself (think being the key word).. but I want it done right, would it be worth the extra cost? hell for that matter is there anybody in the houston area that'd be willin to help me out or point me to a place to get it done?

I'm not scared to try it myself.. but at the same time I wanna know what I'm getting into first.

Oh you rock! Thank you sooo much!

Of course right as I see that you'd answered, my power goes out for a couple hours...bah! hehe.

I think I can handle this install.. but we'll see. How much do you think it would cost me to get it professionally installed anyway? hehe.. just wodering so I can save my butt if I screw up.

Thanks again,
Kyle

Q about cdt speakers??

Ok.. I was discussing my planned system with a friend of mine.. he brought up a question that concerned me.

Will the 6.5" CDT Classic CL-61 speakers fit my protege5? He said he thought the mounting depth or something would prevent it from working with the normal converting plates that let you put the 6.5s in the 5x7 hole. Is this true?

Just trying to prevent problems once I get this going heh.

Thanks again to all who've helped.. especially blue for the massive knowledge.

I think I may have actually mentioned this at some point during one of my many posts... but I have a 2003 P5.

I found out a friend of mine is good with wiring and I didn't know it..so he's going to help me out.. hopefully I'll have this done pretty quick.. if I really figure out what I'm doing I may write something up on how to do it actually.. that is if I stumble upon any tricks with the p5 for getting the wiring in the right places.. but I'll definatly post some pics.

How would I make my own adapters? That's something i never even thought about heh..

thanks for all the help.

Power wire goes from the battery to the amp and the ground wire goes from the amp to a metal spot close to the amp. There is a good ground point in the trunk of the PR5 under the carpet behind the rear seats. Just have to lift the carpet up and you will see a 10MM bolt I believe (on both sides).

Here is a pic of mine on the driver side of my car. You will want to ground both amps at the same point if possible to keep ground loop noise from happenning. can get more pics of you want. it is rainning up here in mass now.

ok, making the plate doesn't sound too difficult. But, a question.. I was thinking if it's a 5x7 hole.. how does a 6.5" speaker even fit? It'd fit in the 7..but it'd be to high for the 5? I'm confused.

Anyway, a couple questions before I place my last order (already have the HU and Frnt Speakers on the way).. which O-series sub do I want.. the 12O.44 or the 12O.14??

Also, I found some Infinity Reference 652i speakers on ebay for cheap.. but one has a crack? Could you take a look and tell me if you think it will make any difference?

Speakers on ebay

Thanks,
Kyle

Ok money is becomming an issue.

The way I added it up.. all the wiring with shipping would cost me $269.87.. that's a lot.. or maybe I'm adding wrong? And that's assuming i waited for the inline fuse holder to be back in stock at knukonceptz...or it'd be more. I also can't find a 180amp fuse for it?

I was talking to a friend in a chat room who used to sell car audio systems.. he's pretty sure that 4 gauge would work instead of the 1/O.... would it? If it's not needed then it'd sure cut my cost a bunch. If so wouldn't I need a different distrubution block?

And thanks for the warning on the speakers, I figured as much but wasn't sure.

Kyle
