custom enclosure for P5??

I'm attempting to gauge the interest in a fiberglass/MDF enclosure for P5 owners which would hold a single 10" woofer in about .6-.75 cubic feet sealed and be custom fit to the passenger side of the rear hatch area. It would be covered in black carpet(front and back), come wired with monster cable speaker wire, come with a flush mounted grill and come damped internally with dynamat spray damping material and pre-filled with dacron filler. It would only take up minimal space and would be easily removed if access to the jack is needed. The price would be about $175.00 plus shipping, which is a great deal if you have ever priced a custom box at a reputable shop, they usually start at about $200.00 for a rectangular box made just of wood. If there is sufficent interest, I will build one in my P5 and post some pics, and I'll weigh it so shipping can be calculated and anyone concerned with saving weight in their vehicle can factor that information into their car's weight. (They probably won't be very heavy) I would also take precise internal measurements of the prototype so any potential customers could choose a suitable woofer for it. (mounting depth, internal volume, ect.) I suppose I could also build them for 12" woofers if there is enough demand for them, and I'd say the 12" versions would go for $200.00 plus shipping. Anyone interested can respond to this thread or e-mail me at jgandcg@yahoo.com .

Would rather have a enclosure for two 10" or 12' in the spare tire well, that way can cover them with plex and still use trunk to fullest. Seen it done on a WRX hatch back, looks sweet and is clean enough for show.
but thats just me, i like low profile/stealth enclosures that keep the car looking stock.
Good luck though.

sounds like a good idea, would you be able to accomodate special orders based on the type of sub a person buys? yeah, post some pics when you get it done, i'm sure a lot of ppl on this board would look at and consider it.

I AM INTERESTED!!!

I have already built a custom fit enclosure for this area (passenger side of the hatch), but mine is all MDF and is WAY too small in terms of interior airspace.

I have certain depth restrictions, due to cargo (toolboxes) I carry every day, so the depth is a major issue. I am working on getting materials (and time - and the energy) to build a fiberglass enclosure of my own in this area - but I would be VERY interested to see your results.

I hope you build it!!!

My only other issue is that I have the Mazda cargo tray. It has a lip around the entire outer edge - if I built an enclosure, it would contour around that for nice snug fit, but I don't know if you have the desire to build a "second model" just to accomodate the cargo tray.

So - are you planning on making a true mold of the passenger side of the hatch? That would be my plan, but like I said, I just haven't found the time yet.

.75 (or slightly larger - like .9 - to account for driver displacement) would be PERFECT for my RF Punch HX2 10".

Keep us updated - feel free to PM me also, or get me at nejnai@optonline.net.

Thanks!

I would be making the enclosure based off of my personal protege which does not have the cargo mat, so I'm not sure how that would work out for you. Looking at your pics of your car, it looks like you'd have to trim it a little to fit around the enclosure. I know not everyone would be cool with the idea of cutting up their cargo mat, just a suggestion. As far as the airspace goes, I had really only planned on making a prototype, measuring the exact airspace that it has, and then making duplicates of it, so until I build one (which I will probably do over the next two weeks) I won't know exactly how much airspace it will have. I didn't really plan on making different ones for different woofers, I just thought of it as something a person would buy before they selected their woofer like a pre-fabbed box, just custom fit to their car to answer onehawaiian's question.

Hi

I'm also very interested in this enclosure. How many liters do you think you are gettingout of this ?

This would be a good alternative for my spare wheel sub. I built it last week and I have a 10"
Axton woofer in it and it sounds not that good
as I expected. Especially when the spare wheel is in. I was thinking of building a new enclosure for the side.

Would it be possible to build a bassreflex system
out of there ?

Please let me know I'm very interested.

Wouldn't it be possible to build just the back of the box and use and MDF for the top, where the woofer is mounted ? Fix it with some screws in the fibre part.

I don't think a ported box would really be practical because I'm guesstemating that the volume of the box will not be more than a cubic foot at the very most, but probably smaller. At that volume to have a port in it that would have a diameter large enough not to be noisy, the port length would probably not be practical because it would be too long to fit into the box not to mention the volume it would displace in the box requiring the box to be larger which kinda defeats the purpose. I suppose if you wanted to get creative, you could use a flex-port and have it protrude out of the box, but it would probably look like a set of bagpipes.
Wouldn't it be possible to build just the back of the box and use and MDF for the top, where the woofer is mounted ? Fix it with some screws in the fibre part.
the top, bottom, and the woofer mounting baffle will be made of MDF. The back and front will be made of fiberglass.

I am most definetly interested. However, see if you could build one for two 10" subs. I know you want to save space too, but I think that there would be more demand for it. But it sounds like a great idea. Post pics up when you are done.

Well, for sure keep the updates coming. I am thinking you might be able to get some sales out of this thing.

Another idea would be to sell a fiberglass "shell" - the only MDF being bracing all around the edges - really just a piece of 'glass molded wherever is necessary (to the side panel and "front" of the box, near the hatch itself) and that's it - to allow someone o build their own baffle, top, bottom, etc. and attach it to the MDF edges of the molded fibergalss shell - to maximize the airspace to any particular woofer, make it a dual woofer box, etc.

I would certainly be interested in something like that - would save me a ton of work molding my own.

Keep us posted on the progress.

I would also be interested in a custom enclosure for a single 10" or 12" sub. Please do keep us informed of the details.

O.K.--you guys have me convinced. Prototype construction will begin this Friday. I will have many more answers to all of your questions once I start getting my hands dirty. Keep the replies coming and I will keep everyone updated on my progress. As soon as I finish one, I will post pics. Spread the word....
