dash kits
I have a 2003 protege and will be buying an HU in a few weeks, so I need a dashkit of some sort. The only one I have seen in person is I believe the scosche MA1537, but I don't like it too much. I'm wondering if there are any other options besides the Mazda pocket? I've seen pics of DIN sized pockets but am not sure who makes them or where to get them. ny options will be greatly appreciated

I tried to use the kit in my P5 and didn't care for it either. A buddy of mine cut out a piece of 1/4" plexiglass to cover the space. We then over laid it with a piece of carbon fiber. Installed the new HU and a Dakota Digital volt meter in it. The piece is secured in place with 6 screws.
It looks very sweet. The carbon fiber matches the trim and surround on the gauge cluster. The Dakota Digital volt meter is in the brushed aluminum (to match the DaveB rings) and blue readout to match the Eclipse HU's blue.
All I'm saying is, you options should not be limited to the Scosche kit.

I suggest the carbon fiber idea. I made a custom pocket for mine out of some aluminium and raw CF. If you want to get trickey, put a 6 inch LCD in the 2x DIN place and have your Head Unit pop out of the center of the dash =)

I couldn't find anything that looked decent. Everything I found looked cheap (both the Scosche and Metra kits), so I finally just decided to spend the $75 and get the Mazda pocket. Yeah, it was way more than I wanted to spend, but it was the only thing that looked good, and I don't have the skills to make anything custom that would look decent.
