Driver side speaker

Driver side speaker
I've got 4 sony explode 6.5' , and on my driver side door, I think it gets shorted out;
When I take the door apart, there is a foam piece that i guess that houses the speaker from touching the metal frame.
Some how it touches it or something, I dont see how though. How do i fix this, should i just trash that foam piece and buy some household foam insulator? It only does it on the driver side though, when it goes out, my whole speaker system goes (thinking that the speaker is touching the metal - the metal might be grounded?). But my subs still stay on.... thats a big problem when your ridin by people and all the sudden - your music goes out.... hehe
Thanks in advance,
Earl

Hey Earl,
I've only done 2 speaker swaps in my life, but from general electronics experience, I'd be suprised if the speaker chassis is grounded. I'd be more suspicious of the connector to the back of the speaker. Perhaps it's not the nice kind that have plastic built up around the connectors? And maybe the 2 terminals are getting pushed up against the door/speaker-cutout and shorting that way? If so, get some heat-shrink tubing at the auto store and shrink it w/ a match or lighter. Also, do you have a nice, safe passage for the wires thru to the door? They could be getting crimped in the door jam and shorting out.
Just my thoughts... good luck,
Don Cab.
