exterior paint oxidation and clear coat question
my 1st gen protege's roof is oxidizing. i can peel off this stuff with my fingers. i was curious that if i could take time and peel everything clean and just spray a layer of clear coat over the paint. would this work? and would some clear coat that comes in a spray can work? thanks.

i suspect the reason noone replied was that we don't want to be held accountable for giving bad advice that might make you mad once you screw up the roof of your car
i guess it depends what you want. clear coat is clear coat - from a can or from a man, in a boat or with a goat - i do not like green eggs and ham, i do not like them sam i am!?!?! i'm easily distracted.
if you're happy with the color you'd get from peeling the paint off, then i'd suggest sanding the area with finer and finer grit (you'll need to be finishing with wet and dry 1000 grit minimum if you can get it) until it is completely smooth. make sure you don't start with a coarse grit cos you'll never get the grooves out.
then have a go applying the clear coat - it will be a nightmare of a job, specially on the roof. look up a web page or two about spraying and practice a bit on something too, make sure you get those long fluid strokes going else it'll all be a huge mess.
three or four coats of gluggy mess should be enough
if you'd like to have a go at adding the color first you should be able to find the color code in the engine bay and any decent spray shop will be able to mix it up for you.
i wish you all the best but personally for the roof, i'd be asking someone else to do it - its such an awkward spot to get to - you'll see what i mean.......
