Infinity Kappa's
Hey everyone!! Merry christmas!!
question.....
my parents gave me $200 (cdn) for christmas for some new rear speakers for my 3
(i currently dont have any...)
so im only looking at futureshop or bestbuy mostly, because its close by.
i found these Infinity Kappa's (6x8's) at futureshop, they're $250, on sale for $180, and them seem to be pretty good and a peak power of 300W!!
so does anybody have any experience with these speakers??
is there a different brand i should be looking at?
im most likely going out tomorow (boxing day)...
heres a link for the Kappa's i want....
http://www.infinitysystems.com/caraudio/product.aspx?ProdId='KAPPA682.7CF'&Ser=KAP&Cat=MEL
thanks for the input in advance!!!

I would have to imagine that they are being drowned out. You are powering 300 watt speakers with less then 50 watts. This proves to be very inefficient. It's like putting your engine in a viper. The viper is made for speed but you don't have the hp to get it going.
All things being equal, you would get more sound out of a 50w speaker then a 100w speaker using the same 50w of power.

yeah im aware of that because the stock decks dont have too much power at all...like, normally 50w a speaker...so maybe in the future i'll buy a 4 channel amp for those speakers...you know, once i have money....
and if i want to hear the music more than the subs, i'll just put the balance more to the front, because since my subs are hooked up to my rear speakers, if i put my balance completly to the front, my subs wont make any noise what so ever...
so all in all, im happy with it......now if i could just get rid of that rattle....
p.s., the rattle seems to be coming from under the vehicle (its not trunk as i thought it was) and its worse when i have a full tank of gas

so i only get 10W a speaker?? thats kinda sucky
how would i make my whole system louder?? with an amp for the speakers??
and if my subs are hooked up to my rear speakers, and i made my speakers louder, would that mean that my subs would be louder??
and what does 12VDC mean??

1. Yep. Not much. But gives you an idea of what a real RMS number means.
2. Yep. Four channel amp and a new head unit with front and rear (or sub) outputs.
3. No, the bass would get louder sooner - but is still limited by the bass amp out put.
4. 12 Volts Direct Current - what the car alternator puts out.

You can keep the stock stereo and add an amp. You will need to buy the amp (4x50W would be enough for the speakers you have), plus you will need to buy Line Output Converters (LOCs) that take the deck speaker output and convert them to an amplifier input level, or buy and amp that can take speaker output levels directly, and get both the male and female adapter harnesses from schosche that are normally used to add an aftermarket deck to a stock speaker/wiring system to splice the LOCs/amp in between your stock deck and the speakers. It's what I did in my P5, and it works great, but probably more effort than replacing the deck altogether.

I wouldn't worry about making your system "louder". It's probably loud enough as it is. You'll get more satisfaction out of making your system sound clearer. So when you do turn that volume up, it doesn't crackle and make you wince.
The stock unit sucks and that's why you are getting distortion when the volume goes up. I'd say the best results would be seen by getting a new HU - when warranty expires/lease is over, snap the stock HU back in. =)
An amp will help you out - but you'll still be amplifying the stock HU's signal = amplifying the distortion.
PS nice speakers - I wish I had them. I would have shoved them in my fronts. =)

Like DaleK said, there are plenty of ways to keep your stock HU and add an amp. And adding an amp will make a huge improvement not just in overall sound level, but is how far you can turn it up before your ears start to bleed.
Since the stock HU is limited on it's EQ functions, maybe look for an amp with some decent tone controls built in. Also find a spot to mount it before purchasing something, and look for an amp that will fit in the spot you want.
