Instrument Cluster for '00 DX

I found a cluster w/tach from a junkyard for $75plus $10 to ship...is this a good price??....also will this just plug right in...I've heard that it will and if so I'd rather have this than an aftermarket tach....any advice would be helpful!!

the milage will show to be different. if you can, just swap out the circuit board from the back, and the fuel-temp gauge and the tach. should work out fine that way.

but isnt the mileage stored in the ecu?? I thought the odometer reads whatever the ecu tells it to....look at Negatize's how-to on doing indiglo's(which I should have to begin with...looks like mine will just plug in and my odometer(digital) will read whatever the ecu says on it...right???

nope, milage is stored in the gauge cluster.

so then you are saying remove my correct odometer and put it on the new cluster that has the tach and that should work??

Talking Instrument Cluster

Hey,
I was going to do this upgrade as well, but I was wondering about the miles myself. Please post how everything works out if you would. And if all goes well, I intend to do the Upgrade.

Thanks,
Barry

P.S. --Installing aftermarket Power doorlocks and Keyless entry on the 99+ DX Pro's is also a VERY Nice upgrade and it somewhat easy.

I've always thought the mileage was stored in the ECU. I've had the entire cluster out of my car, and the only thing it reset was the trip odometer. I didn't see any kind of backup battery anywhere in the cluster, so unless there's a tiny hard drive somewhere in there permanently storing the milage, (no way) then the ECU is storing it in its memory.

it doesn't need a hard drive to store memory, just a little flash chip, like in an mp3 player. (those things are small) my digital camera uses smartmedia cards, which are about the size of a postage stamp. the memory for your odometer doesn't need to even be that big, just big enough to store a couple numbers.

Hmm..I didn't think about that. That could be true, but then again it could not be though.

so according to the thread you linked to... you could take it to the dealership, and have them install the new one and still keep your warranties and all that stuff cool, and have them put the correct mileage in the new gauge cluster. :]

new cluster

This has pretty much been stated but when you do replace your cluster you will have all your mileage reset. I broke my needles installing a set of indiglo guages and paid $382 to get a new cluster installed. The mileage was stored in the cluster so my new one read 0's across when I got it. So that I couldn't cheat anyone when I sold the car they recorded the old mileage into the computer and put a decal with really strong adhesive in my door stating the original mileage, along with one on the back of the new cluster.
