I just used XTC foam baffles on mine - actually, just the fronts. My rear speakers are EL CHEAPO (still considering disconnecting them altogether), are only run by deck power, and I just didn't care enough.

I didn't even know that the rain guards were on there at all....till I pulled the speakers out...and could see that they are held on with some adhesive of some sort....and just gently pryed them off...and stuck them on the new speakers...didn't even need to apply any new sticky.....just had to modify the rears to fit.

the TWO things that cruchfields is NOT telling you is that if you use speakers of sized that WILL fit but different from the original you will be required to modify the rain guards if you intend to use them..AND, they also don't TELL YOU what your limit on mounting depth is.....and in the front doors its 2 1/2 inches...and about 4 1/2 inches in the rears.

Is there any benefit of not getting 5x7 and 6" speakers to replace the stock speakers?
Anyone have any suggestions on speaker type. Should 3-way speakers go in the front, and 2-way or 1-way go in the back?

as far as three, two or standard speakers........MY BEST advice is go to a REAL audio store...where they have a room set up with all the different speakers in it just to listen to.....actually listen to the different speakers and make a choice particially based on what you hear.....certainly there are other factors involved...as in PRICE>.....but there are many of us that our true ability to distinguish between a GREAT speaker and a GOOD speaker is limited...and we may never REALLY be able to appreciate the difference between the two. so why spend money on GREAT speakers.....when you can't tell the difference in your sound quality. As I said....go to a REAL audio shop....listen to them....get something that sounds good to YOU. there is something to think about when you are listening to them....ask the guy...WHAT IS DRIVING THEM....how much power? if you listen to a speaker that can handle and is being driven by an amp with say.....100 watts RMS and you say. WOW!! THOSE ARE GREAT....and you get them, take them home....install them....turn on your head unit and they don't sound nearly as good....but because you are only pushing them with 10-15 watts.....well certainly they are not going to be the same.....consider your system as a whole and what you are planning to end up with....compare apples to apples.
