OK, I got the last one done today but I found a little problem in the passenger side rear tire...A NAIL!!!! I can't believe that shiot! it wasn't that bad really since I had the tire off anyway painting the caliper I went ahead and got out the old trusty tire repair kit and fixed it. But it still sucks

Looks great! What did you use for paint and how did you do it?

Went to Wal-Mart and got some High-Temp Engine paint. About $3.50

Then you just jack up the front end of the car or one wheel at a time, take the wheels off, mask everything that you don't want painted w/ newspaper and paint away.

It's not too hard.

I see that it's been about a month since you did this mod. How does the paint hold up?

Thumbs up

So far, So good!
They are a little dusty because I haven't washed my car in two weeks but they are not chipping off or anything.

I finally posted my caliper pictures on my website... (but I've posted them below)

The pictures make it look quite dark, but its actually quite bright red. ONLY one of them has SLIGHTLY chipped off, not really noticable unless you look right up next to it... I may redo them in the spring time, and spend a little more time on them.

I did the same thing with that type of paint to my RX-7, and haven't had any problems with them...still looks great and it's been about 4 months...

Whatever you do don't waste your $$$ on those "kits" they sell at lame *** import shops - they are basically the same damn paint from I have heard.

Reading a few posts regarding brakes, and looking at more pictures of calipers, etc etc, I am thinking of redoing the paint job I did on my calipers end of winter (2-3 months time from now).

But I actually want to take the calipers right off, and paint them. I also want to put a clear coat over top of it, (so it looks a LOT better, kinda like aftermarket ones). Is there a clear coat caliper spray that can be bought to go over the red spray?

I was also thinking of getting a stencil kit, and to spray mazda on them (in small letters) in a white color (over the red) then clear coat.

What do you think? Also is it difficult taking the calipers off/on?

don't waste your money!

All I hear are people saying that you have to use high heat paint or special caliper paint. You don't need to waste your money on these... Myself and friends of mine have been using regular old rust paint. I have used this on my other cars in the past and never had a problem with the paint flaking peeling melting or oxidizing ( that's cause it is rust paint ). I painted my calipers about 3 months ago on my P5 and they look great ( I will take pictures tomorrow since it is dark right now ). You don't need I high heat paint because the caliper assembly will never get hot enough unless you are auto-crossing for along, long time! The brake pad and rotor are the only parts that get hot enough to warrant the use of high heat paint ( please don't paint these, if you do try this url : www.stupidpeople.com ) The best part about rust paint is it is cheap I can get it here in Canada for about $3 - $4 a can @ Canadian Tire. So if anyone is thinking about painting their calipers, be smart with your money and don't buy a more expensive paint that you do not need.

Yeah, I went to Lordco when I first painted my calipers, and bought my spray paint from there. It actually said on the side "Caliper Spray", and it was only $6.95cdn, I figured it couldn't get cheaper than that.... so thats the spray I used, and it looks good.

I just want more of a "custom/expensive" look to it, so it doesn't look like a normal spray paint job. Thats why I want to take my calipers right off, scrub them down (to get rid of that ruff look to it), and then paint them. If possible, I might also take them to get them anodized (my dad knows a place that does all his anodizing). Would that be better to get done?

Then I wanna clear coat them after that, so they look shiny...

Plugs are meant for bias-ply tires...patches are meant for radials.

Ive been thinking about painting my calipers RED . Ive never messed with brakes on a car before, how easy is it to take the calipers off? I am mechanically inclined, but ive never wanted to do the brakes on a car before.

Having seen my calipers glowing a dull orange before, they can and do get hot enough. I'll admit, I was trying to make a set of (what turned out to be) race pads fade, and I had just done a max effort stop from about 110mph, but the potential is there. Just try driving down a long winding mountain road with some spirit, and you may get your brakes that hot.
