Painting Brake Caliper Question?
#16
Wow... a bit touchey aren't we. Well, I guess now that we've established that Identity_x is not equal to Identity_rice, we can move on.
I originally meant to say that I wanted to do a color that closely matched the body paint. I should've just said "I don't want red or yellow because I personally think it's a bit overdone and cheesey, unless you own a red or yellow car."
Just remember that opinions are like noses: everyone has one, and they all smell.
That said, you can get all uptight about all you want. And you can flame me to death if you want. I don't give a ****, cause in the end...
nah na nah na nah nah... you can't touch me
In all seriousness though... I'm sorry that I offended you... please accept my sincere apologies.

no
touch up paint will not work get some Krylon spray paint that matches your car, or whatever color you want and hit them with that after a few coats 4 or 5 or until it looks good then hit them with a Krylon clear coat spray paint 2 or 3 times and they will look outstanding.

I've got an appointment with a body shop today, to do the repairs to my undercarraige after my car rolled away on me... I'm probably gonna ask the guy to do some extras since I've got it in the shop anyway. I'll see what he'll do those calipers for... Just for curiosity sake. It'll probably come out way more expensive than reasonable, but it's worth finding out. Now if they could get a MAZDA stencil... that would be the sha-weet!
Identity_X... If I could get MAZDA stenciled in white, then I would go for red, because that would be completely awesome.

Something else to think about...
Painting and powder coating might acutally keep heat trapped in the caliper...
The reason the caliper doesn't get that hot is becuase air can easily get to it. Puttting some insulation on there doesn't help all that much.
But, then again, the calipers on a Protege probalby don't see that high of temps anyway.
With that all said, personally I would look at powder coating. It'll last a long time and you can probably get a pretty close match from a professional shop.

I have a midnight blue MP5 and I am interested in painting my calipers red. I think it would look cool if the calipers would match the strut bar. I wish the red AEM intake was a better match for the strut bar, I think i'll end up with silver. Of course I'm not even past the break in period yet.

Here is a pic of my painted calipers
I used the Krylon brake caliper paint from the local auto parts dealer then clear coated them.
I used a a heavy degreaser and a very lite sanding to prep the calipers before I painted them.
More pics in my photo album. Click link in my signature.

Here is a pretty cool "How to" I found on painting brake calipers...
http://www.cacustomcoatings.com/how_it_works.htm
P.S. Has anyone used or know anything about the kit that I posted about in my previous post? Its a brush on application, and I was wondering how good this works.
